Spliting Files?

Is there a way to split ripped downloaded files so that I could put them on a ! Gig memory stick. I thing that's what you call them...I then could tak the file to work and watch half of the movie one day and the other the next day. My lat top will not plat the DVD's that I burn on this computer..laptop is an old latituide.
It does play the VCD's that I burn. Thx and it's great to be a member of this forum.
