This may sound a dumb question (don't agree) but what does putting a check mark against the "enable burning with nero" box actually help to do? I've never actually used Nero to burn, I found it easier with copytoDVD.

If you don't have Nero installed on your computer it does nothing, Enabled or not.

If you do have Nero installed it gives you the option to burn right then, if enabled, as opposed to creating an ISO, for example, to burn at a later time.

P.S. Here is a good site to peruse. (http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/)

Does that include Nero Express or only the full program?

I have a feeling that you need Nero Burning ROM installed.

Nero Express is particularly recommended for beginners, as it automatically selects the right settings, allowing the user to concentrate on the main objective – burning disks.
The above From the Nero help manual.

In either the Nero Burning ROM GUI or the Nero Express GUI is a button that will allow you to easily switch from one to the other.

You don't need all the other hmmm!!.... Stuff that comes with Nero.

P.S. However, I do use Recode at times and the virtual drive, Nero ImageDrive.
