I recently got a DVD player and I want to start backing up my DVDs/Make home movies. I was wondering for backing up DVD's (using DVD shrink), what is a good compression rate where you won't loose too much quality?

No one can say for sure except you.

It depends on the type of the movie, the length of the movie, whether you want to keep the extras, strip out alternate audios, how you intend to playback the "shrunk" version etc. And most importantly what looks good to your eyes. DVDShrink doesn't take much time to "shrink" a DVD, so why don't you test out for yourself? Only thing I can say for sure is that @ 100%, you won't lose any quality, rest everything is subjective.

I have found that most of the time if I choose reauthor mode in DVDShrink and grab only the main movie, I seldom need to go below 90% ish in terms of quality. Personally I don't watch extras, nor do I care if the menus are there, I am concerned with the movie.

Your mileage may vary. :)
