View Full Version : which aspect ratio to choose in GKnot?

That movie I want to encode visually has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, but technically it's 4:3. DVD2AVI as well as all players report 4:3, so I think the black borders are part of the signal.

However, since the borders are going to get cropped away during encoding, I wonder what is the best AR to choose in Gordian Knot. Still 4:3? 1:1? 16:9? Or rather custom -->1,85:1?

And a bonusquestion that fits here:
Generally, if size doesn't matter, is 1:1 a good choice? The video doesn't loose so much vertical size this way, but is the result really having better quality and correct AR?
I hope the question makes sense to you, as I'm still a bit confused about things :)

If the movie is 1.85:1 and ithas black bars, you have to use 4:3 and then crop the bars. If the movie uses (almost) the fullframe then you have to choose 16:9.

I wouldn't use 1:1 because it's not the correct AR.

Commercially produced DVDs have a fixed resolution (720x576 or 720x480, for PAL or NTSC), and one of two Display Aspect Ratios: 4:3 or 16:9.

The AR of the content, however, can be anything, regardless of the DAR. The DAR is selected by the author, and the difference will be the amount of letterboxing or pillarboxing needed.

GK uses the DAR from the VOB set, but DVD players use the DAR from the IFO. That difference can allow some sloppily authored DVDs to "play right" in a player, but show an incorrect DAR in GK/AGK.

To double check AR from GK/AGK, take a look at a preview. If round objects (clocks, wheels ....) look oval, select the other DAR.

in gk u mustn't chose any ar as gk itself selects one. very rare but possible that it's incorrect. if so, use the preview window to check which one is good. whatever u change in the settings (ar, crop, resize,...) it comes to effect in the preview window immediatly.
