Strange artifact encoding VOB files using the "fit-to-CD" option in DivX Converter

Hello to everybody.

I ripped an episode of a TV show (52') and tried to encode it to DivX 6 using Converter. I got a 520 Mb file and it worked perfectly.

Then, I tried to encode it again (the same ripped VOBs), but this time using the option "fit to CD 700 Mb". I got a 700 Mb file. When I tried to play it in the DivX Player, the video looked awfully bad: an enormous green vertical bar in the middle, and a split screen: the left side on the right and the right side on the left.

Any idea?

Can anyone else do a test encoding from VOB files using the "fit to CD" option?

I didn't convert VOB-files, but MPEG-1. But I think I've got a similar problem to yours. Also I don't use the Converter but VirtualDub. Here (http://www.ovexx.de/video.avi) you can see a sample video with the artifacts I get everytime since DivX6 on the edge of the video. If it is of any concern I can post the exact settings I used. But of course I tried out with several settings on and off and combinations...
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think it's because of the bitrate (by the way it's encoded at 300kbit). I've done this conversion with older DivX version about 1500 times at exactly this bitrate and resolution. It's always been sufficient and I couldn't notice any quality improvement at higher bitrates. The only quality loss is because of the reencode from MPEG to DivX.
And I have reproduced these artifacts with about 15 encodings with alternating settings and sources. Always the same artifacts at the lower edge.

Well, I can say that a low bitrate can't explain the artifacts I get, which are completely horrible: a thick green vertical bar in the middle of the screen and the split screen.

I've seen in other forums that this happened to other people, and the same as me, only when activating the "fit to 700" or "fit to 2000" options in DivX Converter.

I'll try to post a frame, but please try to do a test a tell us your results.

i have a small request for divx dudes, guys, please put more flexible output filesize options (like "Custom") in divx converter, and pls give us an advanced mode where we can select encoding modes, audio bitrates,type of quantisation etc.

Type of quantization? mpeg is still br0ken... so the h.263 is the only actual choice....

I see now, sorry :o At first look it seemed like a VHS rip, for which this blocky gauge would be typical. Maybe its a source problem in some way.
BTW it seems like 200 kb/s :D

You're right, it's at circa 200kbit. Which is really weird because I do these conversions ALWAY at 300kbit. And it's not a problem of the source, since I reproduced these artifacts with several different files. The used quantization type was H.263 opt. I will do another encode and post a sample video including the actual settings in detail.

It seems that it's necessary to delete the "DivXEncSettings.txt" file before performing a new encode using the "fit to CD" option, and then the weird artifact disappears.

Anyway, this issue's been fixed in the last release, DivX Converter 1.0.2. And the problem when creating a .divx file with menu in a foreign OS (which was discussed at this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96146)) has also been solved, so it's not necessary to create the directory "C:\Program File\DivX" anymore.

But hopefully Dr. DivX 2.0 will be released soon.
