First attempt at backup seemed to be a disaster. I used the same media that I had used successfully for other data backups. The software seemed to burn on both +R/RW media, but was unable to playback in both drives of computer and multiple different stand alone units. Backup software 123 CopyDVD.

123 CopyDVD? Is this (www.123copydvd.com) their website? Maybe I'm wrong, but looks dodgy to my eyes.
And did you actually pay $29.99 for a DVD9->DVD5 backup utility? Bad move if you did. If I were you, I would have gone for some excellent freeware like DVDShrink, DVD-RB+CCE etc (a range of utils + guides here (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm)). Since you paid for it (you did, right? :D), you have every right to contact their technical support (http://63.169.70.249/contact.asp?sid=182947050711192223243006&pid=1318&pnm=123%20Copy%20DVD&seid=3450&pos=Windows+XP). Good luck.

It is dodgy - it claims to be a one-step but it's not, and the results are horrible. At least one version claimed to be able to copy a full DVD to a standard CD-ROM, maintaining menus and extras, somehow using DivX, but I couldn't even get it to work. Not that I expected it to...

IIRC, the developers? of this software, uh, "borrowed" liberally from Open Source tools, but that's neither here, nor there, concerning your problem. The main thing is quality rips, and if you're not getting them, you need to look elsewhere for a little joy.
Shrink is a good place to start. If you choose to do so, USB's link will take you into Doom9's Guides section; you can also locate exceptional guides at Shrink's homesite, dvdshrink.info.
RW media is a finicky animal; preview your .iso's after processing to make sure you've got a valid file, that'll isolate that step out of your troubleshooting workflow. If your .iso tests out and your burned discs are unplayable in your standalones, you can then start looking to your media for the fix (other places too, but media is the usual culprit). Post back on that issue, or enter "media" in a Noobs Forum search and have your answers delivered on a platter; it's without a doubt the most asked question here in Noobs. ;) Happy ripping!
