View Full Version : 5.1 wav to ac3 - Sound decreased in first few seconds

I am encoding a 5.1 wav file to ac3. My problem is that when the ac3 file is played, the sound starts normally but after about 2 secs it starts decreasing in loudness especially the voice. Then it seems to continue at stable loudness. I encoded the file using -27db as dialog normalisation. Anyone has any idea what the problem could be? Or what settings should i use or change? I used the default settings.

I am gonna try to encode it with -31db as dialog normalisation but will have the result in about 7hrs. So if someone thinks that this setting is not the case, please advice so I stop an unuseful long process.

Which AC3 encoder are you using?

Surcode.

turn off "normalize" concerning your ac3 decoder

btw, the way you are posting is not very nice...

There is no normalisation except the dialog and I don't think it can be turned off or I don't know how.

Btw what's wrong with my posts?

just think about the fact, that in general there isn't only one decoder for a specific file type ;)

and until now you didn't tell us which decoder you are using...

ac3filter or ffdshow are well suited for that kind of tasks.

please keep in mind there is an edit button and if I think about me for example - today I saw your post for the first time and answered you (when I or any other member got the time)... as you may remember after a postcount of 111 posts, this is a forum not chat :)

I did say the decoder i'm using, it's surcode. ac3filter is just a filter and does not decode ac3 to be burnt on dvd. I don't know about ffdshow. Will take a look at it and try it.

You are right about finding time to answer posts. The thing is that i have been working on this project for over a year and a half and this should be the last hitch, hopefully! I'm willing to see it finally ready. I was not chatting but seeking help like anyone in the forum. I apologise if my posts looked unadequate.

ok, misunderstanding on both sides... I thought you're concerned about decoding your ac3 stream... but you are already dissatisfied with your encoded file, 'cause surcode is an encoder, not a decoder - so, ac3filter and ffdshow won't help you much here. try a different ac3 encoder instead, for example try besweet and BeLight as an easy to use interface.

within a timeframe of a year I would have researched a bit more about encoding (wav -> ac3) audio ;)

No problem. Re decoding, sorry, typing mistake. Infact in other posts i said encoding. I tried besweet before surcode and had more problems than surcode (i thought surcode was one of the best encoders!). However i did not try belight, which i will.

In more than a year it wasn't just audio encoding. It was the whole dvd, from capturing, editing, title creation, encoding video and audio, authoring, etc. and i had problems in nearly every field! I did research on all the problems i encountered all the way but somethings were unexplainable, like this one and had to seek help to continue. Anyways, thanks for your help.
