Although I have scanned these forums for quite sometime, I have never posted, so I will just post under the "newbie" title. Now I am sure someone will throw a whole bunch of rules and stuff at me, i.e. Check the forums, do a search, read the FAQ, but rest assure, I have already done that. Alright, now the problemo.

I had some PAL tapes that I wanted to be converted to NTSC and put on a DVD as AVI files or SVCD. I had someone do this for me. Instead of putting them as media dvd's, he made DVD video discs out of them, so I was unable to edit them.

In order to rip the dvd to something I can edit, I started by using DVD2SVCD because that is the rave around here. I kept getting the I/0 103 error however. I looked throughout these forums numerous times and tried everyones suggestions (and no, there isn't any blank/black screen at the end of the video), but to no avail. I tried other programs like DVDx, but for some reason it was only ripping the first 10 minutes of the dvd and thought it was done. I also used DVD Decrypter and whatnot. Nothing would let me rip the DVD to my harddrive.

With all that said, I then found Aheaddvdripper and usually trust Ahead products (Although I am uncertain if it is made by the same company as nero?) Anyway, I started ripping and it worked! However, I didn't feel like the quality was that good.

With that said, why was aheaddvdripper able to rip my dvd and dvd2svcd not able to? Is there any other commercial products out there that I can purchase that will result in a better quality rip to my HD?

Thanks for your help in advance. This has been very frustrating. Especially that darn I/O 103 error for so long and trying to get dvd2svcd to work..

Dave

P.S. I have a pioneer 107 dvd writer/reader. I have tried many others dvd readers to see if it wasn't a hardware problem..

I found one reference to the i/o 103 error in this thread (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=89). Even with a link, it's still hard to find:
DVD2SVCD version history / changelog
26 oct. 2001 version 1.0.3 build 5
- Fixed a bug when trying to close an audio stream which for some strange reason doesn't exist in the dvd (io error 103).Surely you're not using a version of D2S older than this? I've got a couple of guesses as to what's causing your problem, but the best thing I can do for you is send this over to the Basic Topics forum where the heavy hitters can take a look at it.
