Hi there!

I started this new thread because there are great improvements on the "Rebuilder's Matrix Editor"!!!

*** This application is meant to be used with DVD Rebuilder PRO ***
*** (Freeware Release doesn’t support custom Matrices) ***

As Usual forgive my English… hope you understand all I’m trying to say here :D

»» A new "Preview/Test Matrix" dialog. Why?
Well, I personally found this function very useful to answer the same old question... which is the best Matrix for this movie?
This feature will help you find that.
How does it work? Easy…

1st Run the prepare phase of Rebuilder, as usual… if you want to use the “Segment Editor” to Blank and/or Slide show whatever you want and save it.

2nd Then you can run Matrix Editor… go to Setup Dialog and set the path to:
• Rebuilder’s Matrix Folder (in the future I will merge this path definition with the next – Rebuilder’s main folder)
• Rebuilder’s main folder.
• Set the path to the .exe of your favourite media player (ex. Media Player Classic, WinDVD, Nero Showtime, etc… just choose one – I don’t advise you to use the latest Windows Media Player … it acts weird sometimes… but if you do and the Encoded Segments doesn’t launch… just hit the short cut on the windows quick launch and you’ll have the “movie” loaded) - this media player will be used to view the ENCODED segments... not on the "little" preview you'll see on the "Preview Test Matrix" dialog.

3rd Click on the button “Preview Test Matrix”.

4th Follow the instructions that appear on the centre of the dialog window.

8th If you want you can run several Encodes using several different Matrices – Note that the encoded segments will get the Segment + Matrix name so you can easily identify what you used in every tests.

9th After encoding will all the matrices you may want… you can View the Encoded files double clicking on the list at the bottom middle

After all the tests are made all you got to do is to choose the Matrix that gave you better results on the Rebuilder’s menu and RUN PREPARE PHASE AGAIN (and all the other options must be set again… sorry… it’s safer this way )
The greatest advantage of this feature is that you won’t be running full DVDs tests (what a pain lol) and you’ll be testing with the most close to the final Rebuilder’s definitions – of course that after applying a Matrix that data will change a little, but I think it will always be for Better 

NOTES:
#THIS FEATURE IS ONLY WORKING FOR CCE AND HC MODE IN MULTI-PASS MODE – One pass vbr is on the todo list. – QuEnc will be next… and ProCoder doesn’t support Matrices but I may enable it so you can take a look to how that “hard scene” will look when the job gets done by Rebuilder ;)

#The translation routine isn’t updated in this dialog… I’ll put it UP as soon as I know that the feature is stable.

#This feature may have several bugs… I made it in one week… and I don’t trust myself that much :D
Please… just report any problem you may run to.

»» On the Editing dialog I inserted the possibility to add and/or subtract a pre-defined value to all the Matrix values equally. This may be useful for matrices like the BDVD - it is known that the first Intra value is not Mpeg standard - it's 16 and should be 8 - this new feature will able you to subtract 8 to the first value and it will automatically subtract the same value to all the other keys maintaining the relative values between them.

Here is. I tried your program and I received the following error just after selecting the segment I want to test :

Run-time error '13':
Type mismatch
Here are the details :

1) I downloaded version 0.2.1.
2) I extracted into DVD-RB's main folder under a folder named 'Tools'.
3) I launched the program and selected the different paths. As I didn't have a folder for Matrices, I created one in DVD-RB's main folder and then selected it as path for Matrices' folder. But there is nothing inside.
4) I pushed 'Apply' button and selected 'MPEG Standard.mtx'.
5) I pushed 'Preview Test Matrix' and then selected a segment to test but then the error appears.

Voilà.

Yes, the 'Prepare phase' is done as I see all the segments. I'm using CCE SP 2.67.

Oh! by the way... have you tried to run the program again?
Check if the matrices folder is still empty.
I ran the program many times again just to test again and no, the Matrices' folder isn't empty anymore.

OK... loaded MSSTDFMT.DLL into winnt system 32 folder, rebooted. Reloaded Matrix editor into dvd rebuilders main folder. Double clicked on matrix editor and get the same errors:

"Matrix folder wasn't found!! Please select a path to it"

"Run time error 713. Class not registered. You'll need the following file to be installed on your machine: MSSTDFMT.DLL"

cannot open the program at all, it will not launch... am I missing some sequence in loading this thing?

Some rules introduced on the Matrix Creation dialog to help you “not making” incompatible Matrices.
This is a cool feature.
"This Matrix may not be compatible with CCE" pops up when I choose the
"Soulhunters v8 (HVS3)" Matrix. It is warning me that the highest value supported by CCE is 127 and there is a value higher than that in this particular matrix.

No problems here.

However I do have one question. Since you fixed the HC "Quality/Speed Selection" choices of Fast, Normal, or Best, are the DC precision choices of 8,9,or 10 in Advanced/Expert Options also able to be selected and passed?

I've fixed the DC Precision value... it will be out on 0.2.0.2... I was just hoping to clean some other bugs that may appear... like the one posted by djan

I've also enabled the "One Pass VBR".

I'll try to release it as soon as possible.

Small suggestion, in setup, you might clarify that it is the Rebuilder installation folder that the editor is looking for. It may be just me, but with the editor looking at files from the Prepare stage, at first, I tried directing it to Rebuilder's working folder.

I'm running Windows 2000.
I'm not at home now so I cannot try the suggestion in the thread (place dll into '%windir%\system' folder), but I will try when I get back.

edit: I noticed it said 'register the dll' - what is that exactly?

I don't know windows 2000 well

edit: before trying my next suggestion... try to put the dll file on the "system" folder and on "system32". Maybe Windows 2000 searches of the folder called "System"

Try this from the "start -> run"

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\MSSTDFMT.DLL

c:\windows\system32\msstdfmt.dll = change to the location of your dll

Remember to put the path between "" if you are using long names, like:

"c:\program files\one good folder\another one as example\msstdfmt.dll"

OK, that worked- I got the system to register the dll, and the program now opens. Now I'll get on to the testing...

Don't you have RC2?... I don't know if the files format have changed...

Where did you get your "MSSTDFMT.DLL"
have you checked if there isn't any new version?
PM you e-mail I'll send you my version (windows XP)... who knows? maybe it works :)

Just to make sure... you have all the paths correctly selected? and you have run the Prepare Phase on DVD Rebuilder, right?... please double check all the paths on Setup Dialog.

It's funny ... but I thought that HC was working fine... CCE is the one that is giving me some headhackes... so many versions... so many file formats... so little time :D

After you pick your segment and then your particular matrix you hit prepare in the Matrix Editor.

After prepare you hit the encode in the Matrix Editor. Your encoder starts minimized, after the segment has been encoded with your chosen matrix, you double click the segment in the "encoded segments" section in the bottom middle of the Editor.
At that time your Viewer.exe will come up and play the newly encoded segment.

You have to encode in the Matrix Editor with your chosen matrix before you can view it with WinDVD, Nero ShowTime viewer or whatever viewer you use.
How is it possible to judge quality on a viewing screen 5 inches by 3 1/2 inches?
BTW, I thought the same thing about the "Windows Media Player" coming up as the initial preliminary viewer.
After you encode in the Matrix Editor and double click the segment it will show full screen with, in my case, Nero ShowTime.

Okay I must be missing something! How is it possible to judge quality on a viewing screen 5 inches by 3 1/2 inches? Every matrix I load looks the same! Is there some way to increase the view screen size? Also, it doesn't seem to matter which media player (I have 3) I set the path to in Setup, the view screen keeps claiming I'm using the Windows Media player! :confused:
Feedback answered well... maybe this is my fault... I didn't made my self clear... :(

I'll try to come up with a better description... or even better... maybe there's someone out there willing to make a guide ;) :D

Well, now I get the " Run-time error '13':Type mismatch" with v0.2.0.2 that djan got in version 0.2.0.1.
I am using the HC encoder, normal mode. It happens in the default and DC10.
Will try other settings to see what happens.

I revert back to v.2.0.1 and it works like it is supposed to. :p

I try v.2.0.2 and the error comes up. After the prepare phase in the Matrix Editor is ok.
When I hit the Encode button in the Matrix Editor the error pops up.

Windows XP
2.4 GHz cpu
1 gig memory

I will keep trying to find the problem.

That is correct. I suggest you try the same segment with different Matrices to compare.

The code for "one pass VBR" messed up HC encode routine :(

HC mode, Rockas Original Skin, No steal space from extras, No movie only, or movie and menu only, no movie, menu or slideshow ticked.

Only thing ticked under the "Mode" heading is HC mode, Suppress warning prompt, and Enable "Output" Directory.
Are you sure you didn't answer in the wrong post? :D
Anyway... I think I fixed it... I'm going to test the "One pass vbr" ... let's hope it works :)

Using DVD-RB Pro v1.00 RC2. Both Rebuilder' Matrix Editor v0.2.0.2 and v0.2.0.3 are giving me the message "You are using DVD Rebuilder Freeware! The Matrices' features will be disabled." when I hit the Preview Test Matrix button. Switch back to v0.2.0.1 and problem is gone! :eek:

Compressibility test before DVD-RB
Hi,

Is there a way to do a compressibility test before to start the final encode with DVD-RB ? So, then I know if I have to use some filters or not.

Lets hope that this time I can dedicate my time to other encoders and new features :)

Everything seems stable using the HC encoder with the Rockas Rebuilder Matrix Editor v.0.2.0.4 :D

Fast, normal, and best quality setting using DC 8,9,and 10 are being passed and all working OK.

One pass VBR working OK with the 8,9,and 10 DC precision settings.

The problem still exists (at least for me) using new version 0.2.0.4. Tried CCE and HC, and both give me the same message as previously reported. Using Windows XP Pro SP2 with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor and CCE 2.70.1.5 trial. The problem doesn't exist if I revert back to version 0.2.0.1. :confused:

Yes, I can assure you it is DVD Rebuilder Pro I am using.
What I find strange is I can revert back to version 0.2.0.1 (overwriting the files) and the problem doesn't exist! I'm baffled. :(

Just tuned in....everything is still ok with Matrix Editor v.0.2.0.4 here using HC encoder.

I had not checked movie only mode before, but it is working fine for me. No problems.

Rockas, here's is the latest update on my side. I deleted and reinstalled DVD-Rebuilder Pro, CCE, and Matrix Editor version 0.2.0.4. I still receive the error message that I am using the free version of DVD-Rebuilder, but it now encodes! In other words, with the exception of the error message, it is working :)

Sorry... another delay. :)
Just for the record... I have one (another) hobby that is being a music teacher (guitar and drums) and I was busy the last couple of days with the "End of year Concert" on the School (I'm one of the co-founders :)) I teach - poor students lol.

Anyway... the above reason is not the only reason... it's just one of three :)

The second is that I've been asking Feedback and Archeo to make some pre-releases tests... well... seems like Archeo has been finding some problems when running the application on Windows 2000 (which I don't have :() so I'm still looking for the solution for them.

The third... thanks to Manono, I'll be able to update the default Matrices with some new ones that may really make the difference when Encoding DVDs (everyone interested on the Matrix Theme should really read this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=97193).... so... I'll need to update the provided matrices and descriptions to fill (specially) the beginners needs.

Believe me... the next release.. may make the difference (when talking about matrices).... specially when talking about the final quality you can achieve (without wasting weeks or months studying matrices or the changes they can make on the final results) keeping in mind that nothing is perfect (please read the posts submitted by Manono on the thread I pointed).

Now... I hope I'll be able to release a new version on the next couple of days, maybe less.

ps1. please forgive my English... I hope that you can all understand what I really want/need to say :D

Thank to manono (doom9.org forum) , now you have 8 new Matrices. The descriptions have changed (not translated yet... I'll have to big SAPSTAR, Rockby and RebuMan... again :)) - Now they are easier to understand by those that are taking the first steps on "Matrices' World".
Note: Manono tried to make it simple but, as everything in life, nothing is as simple as it looks... and using Matrices is not a linear process... you really need to test and learn :)

*I've introduced new XP Style buttons... I hope this won't cause any errors... if it does... I'll think of something :)

*Modified the color styles... again... (I think the new colors will "fit" better on the three Windows XP default themes).

*Some minor bugfixes... as usual :)

It works like a charm!
I like that you can now encode, with the Matrix Editor, the same segment with several different matrices, and go back and forth between them to check for differences in quality Without having to close the viewer.exe( example WinDVD) after viewing each segment. ;)

Oh man, people new to matrices are Finally going to have at least some idea as to what Matrix to use in encoding with the "Built in Matrix Information dialog". This information should save at least a few thousand of the same questions.

I run prepare and then use RB-Opt to tweak bitrates. Then I test the segments with diff. matrices with your nice prog. But it seems MatrixEditor isn't picking up on changes made after prepare? To test I changed a segment from 5116 to 3028 bps and this is what happens:

Edit: maybe it's a good idea to explain what the h... i'm talking about.
I save the new bitrate then launch MatrixEditor, but it still encodes using the original bitrate. I even rebooted and tested again. I can't even figure out where it gets the original number from.. So one of us is doing something strange :confused:

It doesn't happen with RB-Opt only... if you use the Rebuilder's "Preview" to blank or "slideshow" segments it happens too...

Anyway... I found the problem and I'll fix it on the next release.

I can't get the preview to work. I set all the paths in the program correctly, I am using nero showtime, and the new matrices show up in rebuilder. I then run the prepare phase with the newest rebuilder and the newest HC encoder path set and it selected as the encoder, since I couldn't get AutoQMatEnc to work either. After the prepare phase is complete I click on the preview button in the Matrix Editor, but nothing happens.

The movie I am trying it on doesn't have ILVU and if I press encode in rebuilder, HC encoder starts up and starts encoding like normal.

I tried Media player classic and it does the same thing. I am running Windows XP SP2.

Make sure you have the Rebuilder's installation path inserted correctly on Setup dialog not to the working path... if you point the path to Rebuilder's folder, RME will detect your "Working Path"

Don't forget you have to choose the segment you want to preview on the segments list.

No, I never figured out how to use it. I setup HC encoder and the rest of rebuilder and run the prepare stage. I run the newest matrix editor and enter all the paths. I select a matrix and click the preview/Test button and nothing happens.

I don't see any segment list and I think I have configured rebuilder correctly since I have been using it since it came out.

thanks as always....one issue though....really minor, but it does stand out from when I first looked at your proggy....in the setup you ask the prog to point to "the Path to Rebuilder's Folder" Should this be where rebuilder is installed or the "working directory" where stuff is demuxed? Don't use values < 8 for intra and < 16 for non-intra and also don't use values > 255 (better not use values > 127, some encoders/decoders can't handle it)
There's no perfect matrix, every matrix used is a compromise.
I'm sure the values he's suggesting are to err on the side of caution.

I like the extract matrix function on the Matrix Editor.

One thing though, I thought that non-intra values had to be above 16 to be DVD compliant? Some of the matrices I am extracting from the VOB's are well below that.

Probably showing my ignorance...oh well ignorance can be corrected, stupidity is forever. LOL

That option is in a early stage :)
It would be good if you check, on the folder called "TempMatrix" under RME installation directory, the file with the name of the VOB you used to extract... open it on "NotePad" and check if the "extracted" matrix matches the data on that file.

That option is in a early stage :)
It would be good if you check, on the folder called "TempMatrix" under RME installation directory, the file with the name of the VOB you used to extract... open it on "NotePad" and check if the "extracted" matrix matches the data on that file.

OK this is what was in the short 2 minute mpeg I extracted from.
It was in the TempMatrix folder....VTS_01_1.VOB
It matches.
The non-intra on the last set of numbers was what was confusing me.

OK, that worked- I got the system to register the dll, and the program now opens. Now I'll get on to the testing...

GREAT program -- i just stumbled over it and used it for the first time :D.

unfortunately, i got the same error message as archaeo:

and YES, i did run the video through the PREPARE phase, first.

my steps:
1. run dvd-rb and PREPARE.
2. start the matrix editor and then press the [Preview] button.
3. a new window pops up and presents itself with a large "Rebuilder's Matrix Editor" title in the middle.
4. under "Scripts Segment List" on the left side, a bunch of AVS files are listed. but as soon as i click on any of them, i would get the error message and the matrix editor shuts down. the error appears with both the "hc" and "quenc" encoders.

used program versions:
* dvd-rb v1.0 pro rc4 full (fresh) installation (ie. including all updated files)
* matrix editor v0.2.0.7
* win xp sp2
anything else you need to know?

that matrix extraction is a handy little thing - dvdrb gave me a bitrate so i used a matrix that came with your prog (and it was the wong one to use - typical of me that) - so i did an extraction on it and it came out as Medium_High(3200-4000) - mpeg standard - used that and the back up looks supurb :)

I'm backing up a DVD called, The Day After.

Using DVD Bitrate Viewer (v1.4), the average bitrate appears to be about 6000 for the original DVD (total size=6.3GB). After using Decrypter & Shrink to extract the movie only, DVD-RB Pro gives me the following stats:

Reduction Level for DVD-5: 70.0%
- Overall Bitrate : 4,597/3,678Kbs
- Space for Video : 4,261,516KB
- HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 4,243/3,050/3,678 Kbs

Using RME 0207, I extracted the matrix from all the VOB files of the movie, which were the same. The matrix appears to be a custom matrix somewhere in between the High_High (Fox) & High_Medium.

My question is...

Should I use the original matrix I extracted from the movie or opt for one that matches what DVD-RB's prepare mode indicates? (like the High_Low)

Any recommendations?

Also, (and pardon my ignorance) but what is meant by the following description for some of the matrices:

"Use only if the original DVD has overhead for compressing, if a similar high bitrate matrix was used originally, and if you're not compressing too much."

That was the main purpose of the feature :)
You can run quick tests and see it for your self... I'm speaking for my self here: "I can hear others' oppinions but I still prefer to trust my eyes :)"
Oppinions are subjectives... one guy likes sharp images... the next prefer a little blur...

I usually... if possible... choose one little segment to run some "previous tests"... If I can't find any differences... then I go to the hard scenes and test them... RME was built so you can encode just one segment using all the matrices you want and give you the most close result possible that you'll get from Rebuilder.

Yes, but that includes not only the video bitrate, but also the audio stream(s), subs and overhead. One way to get the video only bitrate is to open the DVD in DVDShrink, get the video size and length, and then use a bitrate calculator to find out the video only bitrate. Personally, I don't think that figure is all that useful. DVD Bit Rate Viewer does show you if the minimum bitrate is nice and high, though. I much prefer the Q-Level as given by Bitrate Viewer (http://www.tecoltd.com/bitratev.htm) (taking into account that it isn't all that accurate for NTSC telecined DVDs). If you don't make an .m2v of the movie, then you can check a few vobs. So, if you get a Q-Level of below, say, 5, then you can feel safe in compressing to 70% (in the example you gave) using the same or a similar matrix. I rarely use that High_High matrix, but if it was used in the original DVD, then I'll almost always be able to use the High_Medium matrix. But as Rockas said, that's maybe the most important reason to use the features of the Matrix Editor. Then you can check the results with your eyes, as well as with Bitrate Viewer. You want to make sure that you don't get noise around sharp edges, color bleeding, and especially blocking in complex scenes.

Use only if the original DVD has overhead for compressing, if a similar high bitrate matrix was used originally, and if you're not compressing too much.

I purposely kept that vague. I've found some methods that work for me, but I'm prepared to learn from others that may develop their own and maybe better methods. With older versions of CCE, only the Standard Matrix was available. Even with more recent versions of CCE, most people still use only the Standard Matrix, even though it's a fairly simple matter to add matrices to the list. Now it's even easier by using the Matrix Editor.

1. overhead for compressing - by that I mean the original DVD has a high bitrate, a high bitrate matrix, a low average quant, and a high minimum bitrate.
2. a similar high bitrate matrix - this is important. If the Standard matrix was used originally, for example, and if you have to compress much at all, and you use a high bitrate matrix, the average quant is going to zoom up. You'll get your best results if the original DVD was top quality, because, as Rockas said, "I think he is refering to DVDs that are encoded with (unnecessary) high bitrates" I love to work with Criterion DVDs that use the highest quality matrices, and often have a very low average quant. Then you can compress the heck out of them, use a high bitrate matrix, and still get excellent results.
3. and if you're not compressing too much - This is also pretty vague. I compressed a Criterion DVD by 50% recently using the High_Medium matrix, and it turned out great. The original used the High_High matrix, and the average quant was about 3. That's pretty low, and it had all kinds of "overhead" for compressing. But you can't always count on that kind of thing. Another one I did recently used the High_High matrix, but the average quant was over 10, and even though I wasn't compressing much at all (85% or so if I remember correctly), I used a much lower quality matrix (the High_Low). The original was blocky already in places.

So, the point is, with experience and the study of the originals, along with your own tests and experiments, you'll soon learn what you can and can't get away with.

I have run into a small problem with 0.2.0.7. I was fixing to do a batch encode, so I have 2 different working directories. After the second "Prepare", I opened ME to extract the matrix from the movie, and no files show up in the video stream list for me to choose from.They are there if I open the Preview/Test window, but nothing when I open the Extract window. Any ideas?

On the extract dialog I've written "Working Path" and that may be confusing 'cause people may think that I'm asking for Rebuilder's Working Path... but no... I changed the description to "DVD Folder"... that's what you have to point it to... to your Source DVD Folder... sorry

Thanks for the detailed and helpful reply, manono. For The Day After I used the original matrix. The original is 4x3 NTSC and is quite grainy, so it was rather difficult to determine which matrix to use. I tried several but the original matrix generated the most accurate reproduction of the movie.

I typically only use the Fox matrix (High_High) on SuperBit DVDs, like Men in Black I & II, both which came out superb. It's quite difficult to record a move with a high bitrate matrix unless the original DVD is either DVD5 or short in length (with little or no extras). ROTK was a challenge to me in this regard, but using CCE's default matrix I found to be the best, at least to my eyes.

For my favorite movies I'm just going to purchase some DVD+R DL discs. While I know they are expensive ($3.00+ each), it's worth it to have a good backup and certainly cheaper than replacing the original (something I've had to do before).

BTW, is the MPEG Standard matrix in RME the same as the Medium_High?

Yes, and it's the best available in CCE (not counting the Smooth CG, which is for special cases) unless you add some of your own from which to choose. The CCE Standard Matrix is the one I've named Medium_Medium, and is sort of the "baseline" matrix.

This thing is 4:3 widescreen? Then you're sort of screwed already. You can reencode as 4:3 and use the Zoom to get it to fill the screen of your widescreen TV, or you can reencode it as 16:9 for your widescreen. Either way it will never look very good, as the original DVD just doesn't have decent resolution.

I looked at both Med_High and the MPEG matrices and the bottom portion of the numbers (nonintra?) for the MPEG matrix is different than Med_High. So is the Med_High matrix a custom MPEG matrix made specifically by CCE?

The Day After is an MGM 4:3 pan&scan production that originally aired on TV, so it was probably a tape transfer and MGM didn't bother to clean it up much.

Actually I'm glad you're implementing filters and making it a higher priority than adding new matrices. I have several grainy movies I want to experiment with (especially using Undot) to see if I can perhaps improve the look of the original source.

For a start.... RME will deal (on the GUI) with Undot and Deen only (... you can use others inserting the parameters by hand on a text box) 'cause these are the most used and easier to test... when the get stable... then we'll go searching for others :)

... I hope to release it during the weekend (it is done... but I need to test some new whistles and bells I introduced and clean up the code... at this point even I don't understand what I've done lol).

One little small thing. In the main window, after highlighting different matrices to compare the numerical differences, RME quits responding(showing the actual numeriacal values of the highlighted matrix). This happens when trying to view about the 4th or 5th one. Any ideas what could be causing this? It's not a real big deal, but it does make it kind of difficult to compare matrices. And it does create a problem when trying to see if an extracted matrix matches one I already have.

I just wanted to let you know that I am getting a 'Working Path is not valid!' error when I click on the preview button. I checked the rebuilder.ini and it is pointing to c:/dvd/. That is where everything takes place. Inside that directory is the D2VAVS directory. That is where all the files are after the PREPARE phase in RB-PRO RC5. I am using CCE 2.7.something. I am using multipass VBR, 3-pass.

I'd suggest adding a simple TemporalSoften(2,3,3,6,2) in your program. It'll give a slight compression boost without any noticable detail loss.

Another one would be RemoveGrain(mode=0,modeU=17) , which will hammer chroma only and it's also practically unnoticable but will give some more compressibility.

Out of curiosity, was Kika Comic High included in the provided matrices previously? I thought I saw it in earlier versions, but when my computer went south, I had to reinstall everything and I noticed with version 2.0.8, there wasn't this particular matrix.
Since 0.2.0.7 I inserted some new mpeg2 compatible matrices provided by Manono and removed some that may not be fully compatible or even unnecessary as the new ones will be more suitable for most of the cases, and of course, I can't include dozens of matrices or the application will became too big.
Anyway... you'll find the links to some ZIP files containing Matrices on this thread, posted by feedback, but be aware... many of them are not CCE and/or Mpeg2 compatible.

Yes it was, and I can take at least part of the blame for it disappearing. Rockas asked me to recommend which ones to remove in order to keep the total number of included matrices manageable, and that was one I recommended be dropped. Why? Kika is a very good matrix creator, and he knows his stuff, and it's a good matrix. However, in my opinion, it's very similar to the Smooth (CG) Matrix included in CCE, and that was the reason. So, for similar sources you can use the Smooth (CG) matrix. Or as he said, it's an easy enough matter to import it back into the Matrix Editor.

The same is true for some of the other matrices that disappeared. I had no idea which were the popular ones, but many of the low bitrate matrices were also very similar to each other, I didn't know if the Bach1 matrix, for example, was popular, and I just weeded a bunch of those low bitrate matrices out. It wasn't really any reflection of the quality of most of the matrices, but the fact that the numbers had to come down.

The real reason for the big changes in the matrices included in the RME was that I thought it was top-heavy with low bitrate matrices, and I provided Rockas with a spread of matrices, including some high bitrate matrices suitable for the movie, as well as a couple suitable for low bitrate extras, along with some vague recommendations for when they could be used, He also kept a few others for low bitrate extras. Numbers 1 through 8 were matrices I got from commercial DVDs, or were included in CCE, except for one which was a blend of 2 from commerciaql DVDs (Intra from 1, Non-intra from another). So, I know for sure that the ones numbered 1 through 8 will work in all DVD players, and are thought to be good enough to be used in commercial DVDs, or included in CCE. If some of your favorite matrices were removed, or weren't included in the first place, no insults to anyone were intended. Although I think I can defend the choices I made for numbers 1 through 8, I'll certainly understand if someone disagrees with those choices.

manono has the more useful Matrices included in the Matrix Editor. I just like to experiment with the different and sometimes very odd Matrices included in the Zip folders.

Do I check anything under Main Feature Matrix?

Oh, and one more question. Will DVD RB remember automatically use the selected matrix in the future for main movies? I guess what I'm getting at is, when you select a custom matrix and click "update DVD RB" for, say,the main feature, is that matrix then the default main feature matrix for DVD RB from that point forward until you decide to change it? Or, when going into matrix editor and selecting a custom matrix, can I set DVD RB for one click mode and start over, or do I have to go right into encode? I ask simply because I prefer doing oneclickmode backups during the night, and I don't want to wake up to click rebuild and then turn my computer off. Well... it is supposed that it gets everything done so you don't have to make any changes on Rebuilder... just make sure you run "Prepare Phase" again.

Yes... You'll have to start over again, 'cause, on the prepare phase, Rebuilder must "know" what matrix will be used... every time you change a matrix, you'll have to start again.

I'm trying to preview some matrices but i'm getting a 'working path' not valid error. I've pointed out the location of dvdrebuilder in the setup like the readme says. Also started the prepare phase.

Just some info. that someone down the road may be able to use.

I have 2 computers and just decided to put the Rebuilder Matrix Editor by Rockas on my second one.

I went to install the RME but got the infamous MSSTDFMT.DLL error.
No problem I thought, I just copied it from my 1st computer (They are both using XP) and installed it on the 2nd one in the system32 folder.

Still did not work, then I remembered Rockas advising archeo on his win2000 system.

So, I did the regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\MSSTDFMT.DLL procedure. Well the MSSTDFMT.DLL error didn't come up but a comdlg32.ocx error came up instead.

I went to system32 file and it was not there. So, I go back to the first computer copy the file and install on the 2nd computer. Yeah! It worked.

I finally got the Rebuilder Matrix Editor to open. I then proceeded to setup all the paths and everything is fine.

It seems I needed the MSSTDFMT.DLL and the COMDLG32.OCX to get everything working again.

Well, just Google the COMDLG32.ocx you are missing then drop it in your system32 folder.
If it still does not work do regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\COMDLG32.ocx

I just downloaded and tried Matrix Editor for the first time. BUT, I got the same COMDLG32.ocx error feedback did. I did a PC search and the file doesn't exist on my PC (WinXP Home SP2) and I do not have another computer to copy from.

Did you get RME working yet?
For WinXP Click Start then Run...type in

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\COMDLG32.ocx

This of course is after you download the COMDLG32.ocx

Let us know if you have problems and we will work you through it if need be.

It is a great add-on BTW.

I've done some testings with RME, DVD-RB RC6, CCE SP 2.70 yesterday and now I'm a little bit confused:
Movie was Terminal (PAL), after Prepare RB gives an average bitrate of 4,003 bps so I wanted to test with high_low and high_medium.

The first thing: Under "Segment Info" where does this Bitrate value come from?
It's different (and always to high) compare to the original Rebuilder.ecl. As an example, Original 4,284, RME 5,976

Second, I'm wondering how RME works. I've expected RME to do a VBR multipass with the average bitrate stored in the ecl file instead it does an OPV encoding with different average bitrates:
high_high 6.46 kbps
high_medium 6.04 kbps
high_low 4.33 kbps
low_low 3.13 kbps
As you can imagine with a clear source the high matrix will always give better results.

Would it be possible in future versions to add filters or filter chains of your own choice so that they can be tested and tweaked for each project to save time in having to run a full backup, find out the filter doesn't do what you want or needs tweaking more, then have to run a backup again

Its a very useful option you have started to add and I'm sure will make life much easier for those that like to play or have poor quality sources to try and clean up. Old B+W sources of movies and series especially that are basically just a straight transfer to DVD

Yes, it is easy to do. I tried it the other day on a segment with
RemoveDirtS() just to check out the filter and what effect it had on the movie.
Like Rockas said just make sure it is in the AviSynth folder also.

Just remember that there's a limit to how many filters/files (50?) you can put into the AviSynth plugins folder. If you go over the limit you will get errors.

I am having the exact same question as Rippraff. It seems the higher bitrate encodings always come out to a higher file size than the low bitrate ones, so how is that a true comparison of the final encode? The high bitrate samples are probably oversized so you'd have to further compress them in the end anyway... quite confused here. :(

P.S. is Fox Entertainment Matrix the same as High_High(4000+)?

I think the program uses a fixed Q value for the encodes. When you encode a clip with different matrices and a fixed Q value, the avg bitrates will vary, often greatly. The variation comes from the fact that some matrices quantize more (for example CCE's low and very low), some less (such as Fox Home Entertainment).

And yes, high_high is FHE.

okay all of a sudden when I click the preview/test button, I get the error message "The file rebuilder.ecl doesn't exist! Please run rebuilder's prepare phase before running this feature". Only thing is I've run the damn prepare phase 10 times. But after deleting and reinstalling RME, I notice that the editor.ini file has no link to my working directory where rebuilder.ecl is. Any ideas guys?

I'm not so sure about that, because that's the way I've been doing it for a long time now. Even though they appear to be the same path, the working path is actually the D2AVS subfolder within the source path. It's just not reflected in rebuilder.ini, that's all.

If you wouldn't mind, could you please paste a working copy of your rebuilder.ini and RME's editor.ini? I think those are the two files. I only need to see the folder information to see if mine are correct. thanks.

When using a different working path then the source path makes no difference. I've the same problem and posted it somewhere in a new thread. Rockas was going to solve this problem but he was quite busy so maybe with the next release of RME it's solved.

I notice RME 0.2.0.8 displays the Bitrate differently from the rebuilder.ecl for every segment selected. Where does RME get the bitrate? Shouldn't it get the value of vbr_brate_avg from rebuilder.ecl?

I even tried to overwrite this value from preview.ecl and preview.ini, but is overwritten again when I hit Encode, which is really annoying. Looks like it reads the value from the RME interface instead from the preview files.

Here's an example from one segment:

vbr_brate_max=7800

Hitting Prepare in RME does not yet create the preview files, which I expect it to create already so it can be manually modified. Hitting Encode creates the preview.ecl and preview.ini. I stopped the encode process. Manually modify the files. Hit Encode again, but is overwritten.

Also, RME adds a line pulldown_detect=0 in preview.ecl, which is redundant but doesn't hurt.

Just delete Editor.ini. Start up RME again, and go to Setup and reset all the paths again, like:

When you're in the Preview/Test Window, make sure your Working Path is "F:\BATMAN_BEGINS\blanked shrink\D2VAVS\"
I've already tried that, but it doesn't work! I even changed my working path to be different from the source. In rebuilder.ini, it reads "Working=F:\DVD-RB WORK\", but there is no such line in editor.ini. Whenever I click the Preview/Test button, I get the error message "Working Path is not valid". For some reason it's not able to acquire the working path from rebuilder.ini.

Could you please post a working copy of editor.ini? I need to see what syntax it uses to define the working path. As I've stated, mine is missing that line and I don't know how to edit it manually.

If it doesn't point to the right path, then click on "..." to point it to the path that has D2VAVS folder in it. If this still doesn't list the segment lists, then exit RME and restart again.

If this still doesn't work, then reinstall full version of DVD-RB.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but I've already told you what happens when I click the Preview/Test button:
Whenever I click the Preview/Test button, I get the error message "Working Path is not valid".
So you see, I never get to the Preview/Test Window! I have already uninstalled DVD-RB and reinstalled it from the exe file (both v1.01 Pro and 1.0RC6 Pro), deleted RME and reinstalled it from the zip file... I think almost everything.

The thing that really irks me is everything was working fine yesterday. I did a couple preview/tests and closed down RME. Then I ran RME again and all of a sudden I got this working path bug! It literally made no changes to my system. I'm using CCE SP Trial 2.70.01.05, everything in DVD-RB is at default settings.

If I'm not wrong, you calculate the bitrate using the video_sectors parameter in the rebuilder.inf, instead of reading the rebuilder.ecl.
Anyaway the difference is usually very little.

It happens with all dvd's, PAL, NTSC, including Criterion dvd's which are supposed to be flawlessly authored.

BTW, the preview function did work a couple of versions back. Can't remember exactly which version though.

OK, I also have the 'Working Path not valid' problem. Using the test version allows me to get to the next screen, where I can preview all the segments, but then the encoders are grayed out (using HC Encoder on my test machine. Also did a full clean reinstall of the latest rebuilder pro.). Hitting prepare works fine, but then fails at the encode section - I guess because it can't find an encoder?

I would agree with this, if your RME which I like a lot :) would work in the right manner for testing. ;)
But as I've reported here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=717760#post717760) two months ago the bitrates compare RB and RME are different and if I'm doing a VBR encode I would like to do this as well with a single segment instead of OPV. ;)

By the way I'm sure there might be easier ways, but this was one which I've tested and worked well.

I need to know your exact config on Rebuilder... are you using RB-Opt?
I've been doing several tests and everything works fine, sometimes there's small differences on the bitrate but nothing that will make any better or worst results.
No I didn't use RB-Opt, just made a full backup and started RME after the prepare phase. As you can see in my example, the differences in avr. bitrate aren't little.
By the way spyhawk (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=725891#post725891) reported the same behaviour.

Usually people use one Windows API to get data from files like an ECL where you have sections (ex. [Example]) and variables/keys inside those sections (ex Example= ).
the problem is that API doesn't support Sections with the same name... as you can see on a "Rebuilder made" ECL file that happens ('cause its needed so...).
I need to get that data mannually, but don't worry... I think I might do that... I think I found a way :)
I'll work on that during next week... I hope :D

I tried RME and I think I followed the instructions. I ran the prepare phase first and then I chose my matrix in DVD-RB's options using HC encoder but the encoding was done with the standard MPEG matrix.
I then tried it again this time selecting a matrix first and then prepare and then I got the custom matrix. Did I read the instructions wrong or did I miss something?
1st Run the prepare phase of Rebuilder, as usual… if you want to use the “Segment Editor” to Blank and/or Slide show whatever you want and save it.

2nd Then you can run Matrix Editor… go to Setup Dialog and set the path to:
• Rebuilder’s Matrix Folder (in the future I will merge this path definition with the next – Rebuilder’s main folder)
• Rebuilder’s main folder.
• Set the path to the .exe of your favourite media player (ex. Media Player Classic, WinDVD, Nero Showtime, etc… just choose one – I don’t advise you to use the latest Windows Media Player … it acts weird sometimes… but if you do and the Encoded Segments doesn’t launch… just hit the short cut on the windows quick launch and you’ll have the “movie” loaded) - this media player will be used to view the ENCODED segments... not on the "little" preview you'll see on the "Preview Test Matrix" dialog.

3rd Click on the button “Preview Test Matrix”.

4th Follow the instructions that appear on the centre of the dialog window.

8th If you want you can run several Encodes using several different Matrices – Note that the encoded segments will get the Segment + Matrix name so you can easily identify what you used in every tests.

9th After encoding will all the matrices you may want… you can View the Encoded files double clicking on the list at the bottom middle

After all the tests are made all you got to do is to choose the Matrix that gave you better results on the Rebuilder’s menu and RUN PREPARE PHASE AGAIN (and all the other options must be set again… sorry… it’s safer this way 
The greatest advantage of this feature is that you won’t be running full DVDs tests (what a pain lol) and you’ll be testing with the most close to the final Rebuilder’s definitions – of course that after applying a Matrix that data will change a little, but I think it will always be for Better 

I just tried my first attempt to use the Matrix Editor. I can easily see how most of it works, except for the filters. I wanted to apply Matrix #4 with both undot & deen filters to War of the worlds. I selected the matrix ok & was able to select both filters, however, when I clicked the "Update Rebuilder" button, nothing seemed to happen. When I switched to RBPro, I was expecting the matrix & filters to then be selected in RB Options. The matrix was not selected & the Filter Editor in RB showed Not Active (contained no filters). How is the matrix & filters supposed to work & how can I take advantage of the settings?

Try it at a different time and also check you firewall and privacy settings, if they are set to high it will not download.

OK, very odd. I uninstalled DVD-RB, deleted the Matrix Editor folder, deleted a 2 references to DVD-RB in the registry, then did a fresh install of DVD-RB - now the editor works. What changed?!
This seems to be the key to all my "working path not valid" problems! Even though I'd uninstalled and reinstalled DVD-RB and RME *many* times, I had never cleaned out the registry. I used a great program called RegSupreme which scans the registry and organizes all entries based on program name or software group. So after uninstalled DVD-RB, I ran the program and selected the entry for DVD-RB Pro. Once deleting those entries I reinstalled RB and RME and everything worked fine!

Somewhere down the line I must have changed the folder where I installed DVD-RB. So in the registry there must have been old entries. Or maybe there were old entries for the current working path. Regardless, cleaning the registry of any DVD-RB references did the trick! If you don't have RegSupreme (can easily be downloaded by searching for it in Google) I'm sure you could manually search for the entries in the registry yourself.

I am trying to use the RME, and I keep on receiving this error:

Runtime error '339'
Compnent 'COMDCG32.OCX' or one of its dependencies not currently registered; a file missing or invaild.

I have the direction on properly setting up the program and I using Rebuilder v1.04.

Please check your spelling... are you sure about the 'COMDCG32.OCX' wouldn't that be 'COMDLG32.OCX' or 'MSCOMCTL.OCX'?
If that is one of these two... just 'google' it and download it... put it in the same folder as REM executable.

Speaking of matrix, anyone tried Smooth CG (3800+), and Kika Comic Low (CG) (2500-3800) matrices? How do they look in your eyes? Is there any CG matrix good for below 2500? Please post it here.

Based on your experience, which one looks better: Angel Bestlow/BestVeryLow compare to BACH1? How 'bout RebuMan (2500-3000) vs QLB? So far I've been using BACH1 as very low bitrate, and QLB as low bitrate in Rebuilder's matrix option selection. It's hard to decide when to use Angel Bestlow and BestVeryLow as the bitrate can vary widely. I'd like to know anyone's experience in using the Angel and Rebuman matrices.

I was doing some comparisons of the Extras material on Desperate Housewives season 1, whose bitrate was avg. 2000 kbps. I found Rebuman was good at smoothing macroblocks in the background while preserving foreground details compared to the other low bitrate matrices you mentioned. This was a test I did on only one segment though and by comparing frames in virtualdub, I find I have a hard time comparing results on my TV.

I don't know if the 'Working Path is not valid' is still an unresolved issue, anyway I just performed a clean WinXP Sp2 install, installed DVD Rebuilder 1.05.2 with the installer and I'm still having that problem with RME. So it definitely can't be related to something left by old versions of DVD-RB, at least in my case. I hope I can help to find the problem...
In the attached file I put:
- Rebuilder's ini, log, ecl and inf files
- RME's ini file
- comdlg32.ocx and msstdfmt.dll I downloaded from www.dll-files.com needed by RME (I don't think they could be the issue, but who knows?)
- the log files of filemon and regmon utilities (available at www.sysinternals.com) which show what happens when I push the Preview/Test button and the 'Working Path is not valid' window pops up
Let me know if there's anything else I can do!

Yeah, I already tried it before cleaning up and reinstalling xp, anyway I tried it again now (with the same results):
this version still has the popup issue, but it allows me to go to the next window.
Here, I can select the avs file, I can see the preview, I can select the matrix and I can push the prepare button.
Anyway, in the bottom left corner all the encoders are greyed out (by the way, I have HC and QuEnc installed), I cannot select any of them, and when I press encode I get the following popup:

Hi Rockas,

I also have the famous "working path invalid". I have tried everything except clean install of winxp.
Can you give us a hint on how you trigger "working path...", maybe it can help. Right now I do not know were to focus my problem solving for this issue on my system.

I started to love this app and still do, but today I only use it for extracting matrix and custom them but I'd really would like to get back and use it's full potential.

The ones that are getting the error "working path invalid"... there's a simple workaround to avoid it... just add something like:

ProCoder=C:\Programas\DVD-RB PRO\Encoders\EclPro\EclPro.exe

On Rebuilder's ini file under [Paths] section.
You can insert that path as I posted, even if it is fake... that will cheat RME (yes... RME is as stupid as I)

I'll release a fixed version soon (I'm just taking the chance to complete a full debuggin' routine - who knows... it may take away future problems).

Would be a great addition to be able to replace certain cells with different matrixes you could put it in the preview/test window, then all you would have to do is the rebuild step in rebuilder pro.;) Using one matrix for a whole dvd is ok but I can see some scenes that look better using a different matrix.

I know I can just cut, paste, and rename from the temp file now but this may be a cool feature to have a button to just resave it over the existing one (maybe back up the existing m2v file first).

Well... you can choose three different matrices for different Bitrates... Rebuilder will use them according to each cell bitrate.

About the replacement... that would not be very hard to do but I think it's a little risky :)
I've had some reports about different bitrates reported by RME - that gives different final sizes too... I could never reproduce that difference :(
Anyway... (I haven't finished yet) but I started a fix for that but I haven't finished yet... what really bugs me is the difference of CCE's ecl files between different versions... it's a nightmare and very easy to make mistakes.
Anyway... I'm finishing the first part of another application... then I'll try to finish RME 0.2.1.0

Yes I do use that feature..but even then some cells are not quite what I want..would love to be able to set a matrix for each cell (or groups of cells)..maybe jdobs could add this in rebuilder pro as a option? I am testing some things now to see if your program changes the size of the cells compared to rebuilders size.

also can your preview window be bigger or resizable? At 1280x1024 res. its hard to tell the difference when encoding watching it through the small preview (easy workaround for me of course is just to double click on the test m2v file and it opens in showtime).

The preview purpose is to identify the cells content it doesn't display the "matrix effect" ... you really need to encode the segments and 'double-click' them to view them on the external player.

Without using the Matrix Editor to preview which matrix will work best on certain movies, how can one determine which matrix will work best? Should I just run the prepare phase and from the average given by DVD-RB, decide which matrix to use. For instance, here is what DVD-RB gave me...

- Overall Bitrate : 4,000/3,200Kbs
- Space for Video : 3,228,002KB
- HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 4,205/393/3,200 Kbs

So based on that I should just use the (3200-4000) medium-high matrix?

I ran into my first movie that required enough compression with movie and menus only that it doesn't look good after running through DVD-RB. I decided it was time to look at custom matrices to get that extra little bit.
I have a few questions about RME that I have not been able to clear up by reading some forums.

1) Is it possible to only encode a few seconds of a video segment? I am going to do my encode with QuEnc with "Extreme and slow" settings on and I don't like waiting 30-40 minutes per segment, just to see if I like the result.
No... RME encodes the whole segments... what you can do is search for the smallest one :) or... you can search for the generated AVS script (on RME's temp folder) and add/change the Trim(StartFrameNumber,EndFrameNumber).

2) If I find that different segments with comparable bitrates benefit from different matrices can I set each segment to encode with a different matrix? If DVD-RB doesn't recognize each segment seperately, can I encode each section through RME and then rebuild from the resulting files?
Do a little search for jamos threads and posts... you'll find the answer to that :)

3) Maybe more of a DVD-RB question, but does DVD-RB recognize each scene in the main feature by its bitrate? I ask because there is a setting for "main feature matrix" and thats about all I will have on the disk (movie and menus only) and Im not sure if it will apply this matrix to all segments in that main feature. I hope this is a clear explanation of my question.
On DVD-Rebuilder you have three levels of matrices... to each level you can "attach" one Matrix...
Main Feature Matrix - will be applied to all segments with an avrg bitrate bigger that 3000kbps

Low Bitrate - will be applied to all segments with an avrg bitrate smaller than 3000kbps and bigger than 2000kbps

VeryLow Bitrate - will be applied to all segments with and avrg birate smaller than 2000kbps

OK. Now I am getting familiar with RME and I must say I love it. The filters option is great. I agree with Jamos about the replace feature. Maybe in my case I would like to apply filters to some scenes (mostly to reduce blocking in darker scenes) more than tweak the matrices, but that could make my life that much easier :)

I also just detected a small glitch in RME when I click on the segment I want to preview or change matrices for the encode button dissapears when i switch from matrix to filters or vice-versa.
Also, is it normal for only the encode button to show up?

usually yes... I think :o ... whenever you make a change you must perform the needed steps (clicking the right buttons) to "activate" the changes before encoding.

I am quite curious to know what matrix you fellas are using for King Kong (2006) R1 NTSC? I plan on making a DVD5 of this disc for my kid sister so I want it looking at least half decent regardless of the low bitrate. :( Also being that I'm not used to changing the advanced settings in DVD-RB, should there be any adjustments taken into consideration, VBR Bias and Quality Precision? I am sorry if this isn't the right place for it. :o

What is the avrg bitrate you are getting... if it is below 3000 I would give HC a try :) ... vbr bias 10-15 maybe... use RME to run some tests.

I just did this title (King Kong, R1, 1-DISC version) with DVD Rebuilder. Ripped out the two commercials and the DVD authoring credits (Titles 2-5, VTS 02-03).

DVD Rebuilder reported average bitrate of 2744kbps -- that's pretty low. I did 4-pass CCE.

It looks pretty good (testing on computer, 19-inch monitor, PowerDVD v4), but with this bitrate there is definitely artifacting, aliasing, whatever you call it -- present in the encoded result.

I just briefly browsed it, but one scene to examine is on the island where Jack Black is rolling up on those dinosaurs with camera in tow. Follow the outline of the actors, dinosaurs, dinosaurs in background, etc. and you'll see the blurries and junk.

I dunno, I gotta watch this on an 84" projector, so I'll probably just split it, or back it to a DL disk. There are probably ways to make it look better, but I just know how to do things the default way...

p.s. -- I also did Harry Potter 4, and this one was 3418kbps average -- did 4-pass CCE. That encode looks like a keeper...

But on a more important note, I seem to have a bit of a problem with the Matrix Editor. I downloaded the test version and version on the dvdrb website and seem to be getting this message. :(

However to my surprise the quality after burning and watching it on my 32" TV was much better than HC Encoder. HC Encoder is still the best to me as I use this encoder for most of my project. However this movie was not easy to reencode. So @HKT3020_1 you probable could try QuEnc and Hc and compare result

I am getting a new error with RME. I am using the test version posted a couple pages ago, and DVD-RB Pro 1.10.3. I tried uninstall DVD-RB and RME, then doing a registry cleaner to remove entries for the programs, and reinstalled both. Just did a prepare phase in RB but when I load RME I Get the following:

"The 'Matrix' folder wasn't found!!! Please select the path to it"

and then

"Run-time error '7': Out of memory"

Rockas any idea what this means? Some people have reported that RME doesn't use the same bitrates or passes as set in DVD-RB. I find that when I use HC as the encoder, everything is fine. But if I use CCE, RME only does a one pass encode and selects bitrates far higher than those suggested by DVD-RB. So the test encodes always look brilliant, that's cause they're using higher bitrates.

hey guys, I figured out the problem. It had something to do with missing library files. I read some earlier posts who suggested replacing COMCTL32.OCX, but that didn't work. Then I stumbled upon a site that has an exe file, you run it and it install all these library files into your system folder. Anyway it worked like a charm and now rme works again! No need to install the entire library. If you read back through this thread, I believe you will see the only two files people, including me at that time, had problems with and were missing was MSSTDFMT.DLL and COMDLG32.OCX. (J-Wo, you had a working path not valid problem back then, I believe).:D

For Anyone missing the two files, First google them, second you have to register the files, not just drop them in your folder.
example:

For WinXP Click Start then Run...type in

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\COMDLG32.ocx

Repeat the register procedure for the second file the same way.

For WinXP Click Start then Run...type in

regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\MSSTDFMT.DLL

Hi-

To get the original matrix/matrices, open a Vob in DGIndex, go Options->Log Quant Matrices, and then File->Save project. The resulting quants.txt file has it/them. To make the process a bit faster, you can isolate a small portion of the Vob using the "[" and "]" buttons before saving the Project File.

That's one way and, I find, by far the quicker way, when compared to getting them through the RME, which also is limited to giving you only 2 matrices.

The problem with extracting the original matrices is that they are very possibly tailored for the bitrate of the original. If you are reducing the bitrate substantially to fit on a DVD-5, the extracted matrix may not be as good a choice as it was in the original authoring.

That's a very good point, and one I thought of making myself in my reply, but didn't because that wasn't the question. It's rare for me to be able to use the same quantisation matrix as on the original DVD because the resulting average quant may just be too high, with the resulting artifacts. I do, however, think it's very useful to know what the original matrix is, as well as the original average quant, so I can choose the matrix for the reencode more intelligently.

That said though, since radar says this is a Pride fight DVD, I suspect it isn't of such good quality to begin with, the matrix is the Standard Matrix or some such, it probably has a high average quant to begin with, and he may want to experiment with using low bitrate matrices.

You need to provide more info. on your setup.

BTW, the ability to change a Matrix is not available when using CCE basic... if you are using that encoder.

Im using Pro version. What can i tell more about my setup? I left everything standard in DVD-RB, except:
- 4 passes CCE
- disabled one-click encoding
- using matrix editor

When i select a particular matrix, en run the encode phase, i can see that a m2v file is generated, but i really dont see the differences between all those matrices.
Can u please tell me what kind of futher info u like to have?

Some times there almost no differences. It's depending on the segment you are viewing. Sometimes one scene appears to be more blocky then other scene for different segments. you have to look carefully on the scene searching for blocks or other distortions, some times taking snapshot of the same frame is useful, though I usually look on scene it self and not comparing snapshots

Use the extract function of the Rebuilder Matrix Editor to see if you are indeed using different matrices. You can also use DGIndex to view what matrices are in a video.

Use the full RB installer jdobbs provides instead of the smaller update to reinstall RB Pro. to make sure you have everything setup as it should be.

P.S.
Make certain you are using RB Pro. v.1.10.8, the latest version.

The effect of matrices depends on what you're trying to encode and the bitrate you are using.

As a newbie, I also have this question, because as the last Matrix Editor update was made in 2005, it could seem that the matrixes included in the newests releases of DVD-Rebuilder have been more tested and therefore proven to give more quality for a given bitrate compared to the ones included in Matrix Editor...

DVD-RB uses matrices you set it to use. It doesn't determine whether a specific matrix is good for the material, you need to do that yourself - or leave everything at the default settings which is not a bad idea if you are unsure.

What I mean is that RB as Matrix Editor, also includes matrixes for high-bitrate, medium-bitrate, low-bitrate and very low-bitrate, and my question was related to how performs each of these matrixes compared to their equivalent included in the "older" Matrix Editor.

In other words, the matrixes included in RB are the same as any of the included in Matrix Editor, are they improved versions, or maybe they are older mpeg standard matrixes?

Open them in Notepad and you'll see if they are the same. I'm quite sure they haven't changed in a while so they probably are the same.

Is there some secret to getting this to recognise where your rebuilder work directory is? Brand new user to this, long time rebuilder user.

Followed the instructions, clicked preview/test, and I get a "File rebuilder.ecl is not found". This turns into an endless loop, when I click ok, it just pops up again. I end having to terminate it manually. Which is getting extremely tiresome, I've had to kill it in task manager about 93 times already.

The Prepare has been done and rebuilder.ecl file is in my d2avs directory, I'm looking at it right now. That directory is set as follows in rebuilder.ini (trimmed)

Working=F:\ISO\WORK\

Rebuilder.ini is located in the directory specified in editor.ini (trimmed):

RebuilderFolder=E:\Programs\DVD-Rebuilder Pro

All Apps are installed on E, data and work space on F.

I tried the new M.Editor, regretfully, it doesn't work for me, I set the path to Rebuilder's installation folder but when I try to hit preview after preper phase, I get an alert saying that ecl file wasn't found and this message can't be shut down it's being called recrusively, only way to shut it down is through the task manager..

Mode used, Encoder and passes at least so I can try to reproduce the problem.
Just made a few test using HC got no error.
Some info about the DVD would be fine too.
