DVD Shrink Problems

As a relative newbie to backing up DVD's I'd love a point in the right direction to solving my DVD Shrink woes.

Here is a brief synopsis of my PC:
I have 2 Liteon 16x DVD burners, running off of an AMD 64 3500, with 1 G RAM, and XP 64 for my OS.

Here is my problem:
I have the last ever release of DVD Shrink on my PC. Every time I go to re-author a DVD with DVD Shrink, selecting only the main film nothing else, it back's up fine and burns to Nero at 4X on a Memorex DVD-R. I cannot select a slower burning speed.

However, the problem I am getting with EVERY DVD I back up is in the playback. Every single DVD, and I've tried backing up about 6 different ones so far, starts skipping around the 38-45 min mark in play back. After a few skips the movie resumes for a couple minutes and then completely craps out shortly thereafter.

Obviously I am doing something wrong.

Any suggestions?

We can try to isolate the variables.

(1) How does the material play back on your computer? That is, go the spot it "craps out" and see if it has the same issue using a a computer-based software player. If not, then for now we can assume the material is okay.

(2) We would then have to consider the discs (there could be an issue with those, like compatibility with your burner), the burning software (i.e., is it an updated version of Nero), and the player (does it successfuly play other reauthored discs successfully?).

The DVD plays fine at the "crap out" part on my PC.

I really hope this isn't a case of my standalone player being a dud, or just worn out.

Any suggestions that might indicate something other than replacing the standalone?

Try burning the disc with DVD Decrypter.

Do your memorex disc's play successfully on a friend's standalone player ?

Also, as mentioned by aaron10, there may be a compatibility issue. Not all stand alone's like all types of disc's either. Try burning to a different brand / type of disc.

Does the disc play successfully on your computer (i.e., insert the disc into the DVD drive on your computer and play it with whatever software player you have/use)?

If it does. we start thinking of comaptibilty issues (or problems) with your standalone. Again I ask: Has the standalone played other reauthored DVDs? Using the same disc brand?

If it played successfully on your computer, it would be nice to try the disc on another standalone. If it has the same issue, something is odd and we have to dig deeper in terms of DVD drive/disc brand compatibility. If it plays successfully, then we start thinking of standalone/disc brand compatibility issues.

We need to work through these steps to isolate the problem.

I'm going to try to monitor this thread as long as I can, but I'm beginning to feel the first effects of the hurricane. I suspect my broadband will be out of commission very soon. Since I'm in the center of the projected path, I may not be back for a several weeks, as was the case when Ivan walked through. The wrath of mother nature can be wicked.

Go Here and Read (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=94725) this thread it may help and it can't hurt. Use the DVD identifier posted there to find out who makes your Memorex. As indicated in that thread, many brand name disks have several manufacturers that they use.

I can only wish you the best of luck with Mother Nature. Thank you for all of the guidance you've given me thus far.

I am off to a friend's house tonight to try them on his standalone.

I will reply back later with the results. If I don't hear back from you anytime soon I completely understand.

Things tamed a bit here. One of the first feeder bands passed through, causing some temporary bad weather. I sincerely appreciate the well wishes! We just have to get through the next 30 hours and we'll be home free.

Please post the results from the test when you get back. If I can access the Net, I will monitor your progress.
