View Full Version : "Hide & Seek" question with new RB 1.00RC2

In movies like "Hide and Seek", with multiple endings, which version of the film does RC2 select, the "Theatrical Version" or some other alternate ending?
The reason I ask, is that when "Movie only (no menus no extras)" is selected, the "Input Settings" tab only shows "VTS Title Set 08" and the various audio and subtitle streams. There is no indication which "version" of the movie is selected for processing. So, if you want the "Theatrical version" only, how do you know RB is going to select the version you want? Especially, if the Threatrical version is not the longest version of all the possible versions?
There seems to be no way to select the version you want, in a manner similar to selecting audio/subtitle streams.
EDIT: I found these two posts dated July 4, 2005, in the ILVU thread, which, I think, answers my question:
Plutox Q: "Forgive me if this is a dumb schmuck question, but with the new ILVU support, what is the best way of going about a disc that uses seamless branching to create multiple edits of the same film (director's cut, producer's dog's cut etc.) if I want to backup, say, just the director's cut as a single title with no fancy features?"
jdobbs replied:
A: "That's a feature that will have to come in V1.10... One thing you can do, though is do is a movie-only backup. Typically on a seamless branching title you will have a different PGC for each playback path ("The Matrix" is a good example). Movie-only mode will select the PGC that is longest and the interleaved video from the other PGCs will be left out."

It depends upon how it was authored. If the theatrical version and extended version (for example) are authored using seamless branching (the best way) -- they will both be on the DVD when it is completed -- as they are simply two different PGCs in the same VTS. If the disc was authored the simple way (but not the good way) it can have two full versions of the film on the disc in two different VTSs. In that scenario, the longest would be considered the "main movie" and the shorter one would be blanked.

"Hide and Seek" is a fun one. Seemless Branching with five different versions all in the same VTS. I tried it with RC1 and it was a total failure. I'm running it now with RC2, it's rebuilding as I type.

same here but I used cce 2.50, and I tried it with rc1 and 2 and got an iso of 3.4 gig. I did it with movie only and it had a compreession of 71%. I will now try it with. the menu and extras in.

That option is to be enabled on the Rebuild phase only... and you should only use it as Last Resource... don't forget to uncheck it after your (successfully or not :)) done.

Well I just did it for the entire process. Dose that make a diff? Either way I received the same error. I will try it your way.

I have done Hide and Seek in 2 different formats using CCE Basic v2.70 and RB 1.00
first selected Movie and Extras......Final results 4.30 GB all plays perfect and have all the endings as well.
Full Disk......4.31 GB and all plays perfect
all done with ISO mount (Daemon Tools) All settings are default and no other programs used in any manner for preprocessing

Well I still can’t get the dvd to play the alternate endings. The only way to back it up is movie only, but then you only get the one ending. Any other way and I get buffer over flow and it stops there. I have seen that some have done it but is it with the alternate endings and if so what did you use.
Thank you

Just wondering if there was any progress?

Yes. It has been corrected (at least on NTSC, R1) as a part of RC3 (soon to be released).
Jack'n'xbox
1st August 2005, 17:59
Yes I can confirm that I'm able to get the multiple endings when I use the option "movie and menu only" but with movie only the log says that the reduction of the DVD is 71% but the output is 3.5 gigs. Why reduce the movie to 71% when they’re still at least a gig left?
jdobbs
1st August 2005, 18:45
Not sure... I'll have to run that one in Movie-Only mode and see why. It's possible, though, that CCE is hitting a limit because it has reached the highest quality it can output (Q = 1).

@jdobbs,
not sure wot the current state of play is regarding PGC selection capability
(I've not encountered too many discs with ILVU to be honest, and have only just started reading around this topic here in the forums)
just backing up Wedding Crashers and the "Uncorked" (i.e. non-theatrical) version is the longer of the 2 PGCs in VTS 2 on this disc and I have a couple of questions:
1. is there any (relatively simple) way to extract the (shorter) theatrical PGC with DVD-RB Pro (yet, or soon?) in movie-only mode
(and to everybody else other than jdobbs, are there any easy tools to achieve this in pre-processing - the best I've come up with right now is to PGCDemux the PGC (version) I want, then use muxman to reassemble - this is a long-winded process with chapter insertion and subtitle palette copying!)
and (back to jdobbs again!)
2. If I did a more inclusive backup (full disc or something else?) would I get BOTH PGCs in the RB-Pro output in that case?
cheers in advance
m
finally for all: an observation
using DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.6.6, the Wedding Crashers disc did NOT appear to rip correctly vs. the good old fashioned DVD Decrypter rip
(PowerDVD would flake out in the middle of ILVU playback segments and muxman would complain about trying to reassemble video with illegally long GOP segments...)
this is the first time I've had a problem with DVDFab Decrypter, but it is a bad sign! (particularly considering this disc doesn't appear to have ARCCOS or RipGuard or any of that new stuff)

Hi!and to everybody else other than jdobbs, are there any easy tools to achieve this in pre-processingPerhaps an unusual suggestion to a user of DVD Rebuilder Pro but, is there a reason you couldn't first use DVD Shrink in "Re-author" mode, with no compression?
jdobbs
5th January 2006, 17:50
2. If I did a more inclusive backup (full disc or something else?) would I get BOTH PGCs in the RB-Pro output in that case?Yes. Your output would act the same and contain the same video as the original.
magic144
5th January 2006, 18:01
@setarip_old:
maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression DVD Shrink didn't work with ILVU PGCs?
hard to remember what I saw in last night's backup attempts - since DVDFab Decrypter seemed to give so much grief
however, I do remember that Shrink (with DVDFD's output) didn't show any of the main titles correctly - I can't confirm (yet) what Shrink shows with Decrypter's output (I'll look again tonight)
@jdobbs: thanks!
think I'll probably always end up post-proc with demux/muxman tho, as it looks as tho RB leaves in all the discontinuity flags in the ILVU cells (as per the original), which can lead to the tiniest amount of pausing/'ticking' in both software and standalone playback, in my observation
(I don't think I'm ever going to be a big fan of this branching stuff!!!)
jdobbs
5th January 2006, 18:36
It only leaves in discontinuity flags when there is a discontinuity...
magic144
5th January 2006, 19:05
oh absolutely - don't mean to imply RB invents or injects discontinuity!
it just seems to be the nature of this seamless branching business that discontinuity abounds! - and I think I (and some playback solutions/platforms) 'prefer' continuity :-)

5th January 2006, 19:33
@magic144
I just tested my suggestion, using ONLY DVD Shrink, and it worked just fine. I did it once for the theatrical version and once for the "Uncorked" (extended) version...
magic144
5th January 2006, 20:36
@setarip_old
can you confirm whether you ripped with DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter as it was the latter (latest v2.9.6.6) that really seemed to screw things up for me...
setarip_old
5th January 2006, 21:24
As I said, I just tested my suggestion, using ONLY DVD Shrink. The "Wedding Crashers" DVD has no special copy protection (only good ol' CSS and Macrovision), so I used DVD Shrink to rip as well as to compress.
However, because I'm a creature of habit, I also performed the same experiment using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "File" mode to rip "ALL" files (NOT just "movie" files") - and then used DVD Shrink, in "Re-author" mode to compress the theatrical version only.
Absolutely no problems were encountered in any of the instances of ripping and compressing from my Region 1 DVD...
magic144
5th January 2006, 23:27
cheers again setarip...
I'll confirm the DVD-Shrink behaviour when I get home 2night
on that note - does anybody know... I read somewhere that DVDFab Decrypter reads the disc data in a "raw" mode which bypasses some of the error check/detect/correct capabilities as used by DVD Decrypter - is this right???
setarip_old
6th January 2006, 00:11
Word has it that DVDFab Decrypter is set to automatically replace all bad/unreadable sectors with dummy sectors...
magic144
6th January 2006, 00:52
anyway, yip, actually no probs with DVDShrink on the DVDDecrypter ripped version, so it was DEFINITELY DVDFab Decrypter giving me the grief - hmmm, just when I thought there was a good replacement for the old DVDDecrypter too... guess I'll be keeping this 'old faithful' around for the forseeable (and unforseeable) future!
thanks for your responses - wot a lot of wasted time this has caused me :-)
