encoding divx 3.11

This is probably my 2nd encode, first was crap. I just realized the nandub sbc guide was for experienced people. Less there is another guide i probably should be using. Friend mentioned that he used nandub sbc to encode his stuff. 1 encode had a low % quality, but the preview of the encode looked good. My problem is the cropping. What black bars is the guide referring to? The bars around the screen of the video to make them gray by adjusting the X and Y offset?. I am trying to use 320 by 240 for video resize.
My video length is about a minute long or just over a minute.

You sure you want to use Nandub/SBC/DivX 3.11a? Because they are antiquated now, imo. You might want to try out VirtualDubMod and XviD 1.1/DivX 6. They offer much more features/settings/tweaks. Check out the Doom9 guides from the mainpage. And since you are only 1 encode old, you are also better off considering some automated tools like avi .NET, AutoGK etc. Search in the forums for links & guides.

Black bars refer to just that - the black bars which you see around the picture in a DVD frame, which is used for letterboxing to obtain DVD resolutions. When converting to avi, you need to crop them off to avoid wasting bits on them.

Lucky you, there's a tool which makes the whole process much less painful! It's called AutoGK. Forget about SBC and go XviD, it's almost a million times better.
I once used NanDub for everything, but its day is definitely done. There is no comparison with XviD, or even Divx 5.2.1

antiquated, must mean difficult/complicated for my little experience. piss. The autoGK would have been my next choice. Reason is the same friend in our conversation over encodes mentioned above told me about Xvid. He said with Xvid, it balances things out. If i remember right, it is a balance quality and size. The xvid guide uses AutoGK/guardian knot. Only bad part is it contains adaware.

Looks like your friend hasn't been keeping himself upto date. There is no adware anymore in AutoGK since v2.09 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96337) and even before v2.09, the 'adware' was completely removable. You can safely use AutoGK now, your browsing habits won't be reported to the **AA.

As already indicated, don't use nandub sbc. It was once king of the hill several years ago, but now it's a whole lot of hassle for 2nd-rate quality. It has been a very long time since I worried about black bars.
