not able to open files encoded with x264

hey guys. I´ve an avi that i wanted to encode with x264. No problem, i downloaded it from free-codecs.com (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/x264_Video_Codec.htm ) However, i see myself not able to open those files, neither in windows media player neither in virtual dub ( v 1.6.2 or 1.5.10 ) "I´ve been having this error in vdub: couldn't locate decompressor for format h264 unknown
virtualdub requires a video for windows (vfw) compatible codec to decompress video directshow codec such as those used by windows media player ,are not suitable" This error is known, there are other topics that talk about this, but some solutions that were pointed are not suitable, since I have no ffdshow installed or something.

Should I install it? i saw on other places that the solutions were installing mpegable AVC or installing Videosoft H.264 Decoder 2.2 Beta, which I´ve done with no success :[

anyone has any idea? i really like this codec, since I used to make those clips with x264 work, but now they dont work anymore dunno why, and since I want to publish the clips im making, i need to gather information to solve future problems with other people

Installing ffdshow should almost certainly get it working once you enable H264 decoding. You can get it here (http://www.aziendeassociate.it/cd.asp?dir=/ffdshow).

ah nop it didnt work :(

i installed ffdshow-20050703.exe and those plugins and everything it said, enabled H.264 in the settings but didnt work :(

how can I know which codec(s) are ruining this? :(There are 2 tools you could try: graphedit and directshow filter manager. Googling either of them should show you where to find them.

i´ve installed it, and there are a lot of coloured stuff: ones are green, others red, grey, yellow, pink and so on

Graphedit is for trying to see how the computer attempts to play the file. Drag the video file you are trying to play onto the graphedit executable. It will then open and try to construct a directshow 'graph,' which can give useful information about the filters being used. You may want to try opening an avi file that does work, and see if you can replace the decoding filter there with ffdshow. Try playing with it a bit. The 3ivX website has a few tutorial on how to use it.

Directshow filter manager just lists all the directshow and vfw filters you have installed, and lists their priorities. The only conflicts I can think of might be with Nero, if you have that installed.

Sorry that I can't be of much help. I'm surprised that it isn't picking ffdshow up. Maybe you should check your settings again, just to be sure everything is correct.

It seems to me that ffdshow isn't even being used since some other codec has higher priority. Radlight Filter Manager might help you to solve this problem.

hmm but guys follow my thought: i want to publish this video with x264, I sent it to two guys who had same problems... is really worthy x264, it gives really nice quality like i´ve never seen, but it has also a lot of problems

ps: yeah berrinam, lately ive been trying to install some nero stuff, nero digital and that stuff :s

I'm not sure how many people this has affected, but I have had problems because Nero filters won't work with anything except for Nero.

Also, you may want to consider using x264 in mp4 (through the CLI version; for a nice interface, try MeGUI (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96032&page=1&pp=20)). The output from this should be playable on Nero, even if nothing else works. If you want to use the encodings you have done, you should be able to convert them from avi to mp4 using mp4box.

hmm well i was able to watch the video once i uninstalled nero digital ;d

the question is: I dont think it´s safe to publish a video, with so many codec incompabilities, because I simply can´t obligate everyone to uninstall nero digital and stuff, and there could be other codec incompabilities, do you understand? I guess i´ll have to stay with wmv9 : [

hmm I would suggest trying mplayer, nothing extra is needed to play the files

well.. obviously you need to rtfm ;) Or find yourself a gui for mencoder (there's plenty around but they don't fall in your lap.. you have to look for them)

What about VLC? Have you tried with that? It cannot conflict with any dshow filters since it doesn't use them.
