View Full Version : "Steal space from Extras" question

If I select, say, "25%" to steal from the extras, is it just a flat 25% subtraction - that is, the extras are then encoded at 75% original bitrate?

Or, after the prepare step determines the average bitrate of the whole DVD, does it then take 25% of this average bitrate away from the extras and give it to the movie? (Insuring that the movie always has a higher bitrate than the extras, if this option is chosen.)

I would love to see some interface tweaks that would show this. Kind of like DVDShrink - you can adjust the sliders all you want and immediately see how much compression will be applied to each part of the DVD. That helps me to plan what I want to do.

Thanks for the great program!

There's a help file (chm) here (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=14) for downloading.

Sorry... I can't see the difference between the first and second question :D

But... yes... extras will be encoded without 25% of what would be the bitrate... the saved space goes to the Main Movie

@Rockas
Umm, yeah. I wrote that just after I woke up this morning. :rolleyes:

Let me try again, with numbers this time!

Suppose the average bitrate of a DVD-9 is 7000. After I prepare the disc, it tells me that the average bitrate will be 4000 for my DVD-5. Now, if I select "Steal 25% from extras", will the extras be encoded at 3000 (75% of the DVD-5 average bitrate) or 5250 (75% of the original DVD-9 bitrate)?

I now understand it to be the first one. If it was the second, then it would be possible to have extras with a higher bitrate that the movie, which defeats the purpose of stealing space! (Thanks Rockas and borgraf!)

It also makes more sense, because a reduction in bitrate (from stealing) should always result in a reduction in bitrate! Not the increase the second example gives.

@borgraf
I didn't even know about RBOpt! I'll check it out.

Thanks, guys!

3000 is correct
