DivX Support Tools (DivXSM/Toolbar + Movies folder)

Hi guys,

Based on various feedback since the launch I built a few tools for our support department. Here's a couple that might interest you:

DivX Toolbar Toggle Tool (http://support.divx.com/cgi-bin/divx.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1630)
This tool turns on and off the DivX Toolbar (DivXSM.exe), which appears by the system tray when you play a DivX file. Notes: If you turn the Toolbar off, you will not be able to control the advanced features of DivX Media files in third-party media players, and the DivX video decoder may run with default settings.

DivX Movie Folder Changer Tool (http://support.divx.com/cgi-bin/divx.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1600)
This tool changes or resets the location of the DivX Movies folder. This is where DivX Converter will output files to. When you change the movies folder a new shortcut will be created to it on your desktop called "New DivX Movies Folder". Known issues: Changing this folder will also change where DivX Player stores movies for OVS customers.

There will be more coming (as well, of course, as product updates!). These can help you out in the short-term.

I have to concur with xDrJx here, using the tool to turn off the toolbar turns on the divx logo display even when it is turned off.

This tool also does not address the issue of windows media player trying to go off to it's codec server to locate a codec when playing Xvid media either, and thus delaying play of the file. (This is the one that really needs addressing by Divx.

Guess the tool needs a little more work. :)

Hi sacharja,

You're right. When I originally wrote the toggle app I believe I locked it down to check for DivX 6 codec and Windows XP so as it couldn't be applied in unknown situations that might damage the system.

Because that tool was just a little side project at the time to help a few folks out I'll need to go back and see what I did with the source. In the meantime I have an alternative solution for you that ought to work in most cases.

The first thing you can do is to simply unregister the settings manager. To do that you want to enter a command line similar to the following in the Start->Run box:

"C:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Codec\DivXSM.exe" /unregister

You would then need to run the following before trying to change the codec settings in future:

"C:\Program Files\DivX\DivX Codec\DivXSM.exe" /register

Alternatively (and the method I use) is to add some values to the registry under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DivXNetworks\DivX\SMExclusions

Type "RegEdit" into the Start->Run prompt to start the registry editor. At that location you will find a bunch of string entries, the descriptions are arbitrary but the values are image names for which the decoder will not start the settings manager. So for example if you're running media player classic and you find the settings manager is popping up when you're playing DivX media and you'd rather it didn't you would add a string with value "mplayerc.exe".

Thanks DigitAl56K, the unregister method works like a charm ;) Even postprocessing for MPC is working with DivXSM turned off (which was not the case with DivX6).

BTW: Maybe it would be better to get the DivX installation path from the registry and just check if DivXSM.exe is there. Or just a batch ;)
