View Full Version : My DVD-RB workflow for Movie + Some Extras...could it be easier?

Ok, I'm backing up a DVD, and I'm going to keep some, but not all extras. This is my procedure:

1. Load DVD into whatever tool (Shrink, PowerDVD) and determine which
titles to keep.

Titles (VTSs): 1,4-10,15 (5,4,1)

2. Run DVD-RB and load DVD. Note which VTSs are/are not available
for processing and/or blanking (PRO version). Exit DVD-RB.

VTSs available: 03-07
VTSs not available: 01-02

Note: V02 is not available for processing / blanking, so this must
be taken into account in next step. It's not in my keep list, and
I missed this and lost 26MB on this run.

3. Determine total post-processing gain (TG). Be sure to take into
account VTSs which are not available for processing in DVD-RB. I
use Shrink; using [original size - shrunk size]:

Menus= 116 - 58 = 58MB
VTSs not available = 27 - 1 (Still Image) = 26MB

Total Gain (TG) = 84MB

4. Determine TargetSectors setting. I like an end result of 4460MB.
I believe the default setting is 2236400, producing an end result
of 4.32GB. We realize a gain (TG) from post-processing, so our
actual end result (AER) should be greater than our desired end
result (DER). A simple ratio calculation will give us the
TargetSectors (TS) setting. So:

AER = DER + TG = 4460 + 84 = 4544MB = 4.4375GB
Targetsectors = AER / TS = 4.32 / 2236400
= 4.4375 / TS = 4.32 / 2236400
= 2297230 (rounded to nearest 10)

5. Open rebuilder.ini file and add TargetSectors setting:

[Options]
TargetSectors=2297230
.
.
.

6. Run DVD-RB and load DVD. Make selections and options. For me:
V05 = -a2-a3,s2 (i.e., deselect audio, subtitle track(s) 2,3 and 2)
Steal Space from Extras = 50%
Movie matrix = Encoder Default
Extras matrix = Low Bitrate
CCE options left at default = 25 / 16 / 2 (Bias / Prec / Passes)

7. Hit Prepare. When finished, go into Preview/Edit and perform
blanking. Don't like the numbers? Adjust settings and repeat. For
this example, I changed the Steal Space from Extras to 33%,
gaining 400kb in the Extras bitrate at a cost of 50kb to the Movie
bitrate (determined by examining before/after .ECL file). Return
to Preview/Edit feature and repeat blanking, due to re-Prepare.

8. Make other adjustments to project. I opened the REBUILDER.ECL
file in notepad.exe and changed vbr_pass=2 for the extras VTSs.

9. Run DVD-RB build process. Select "Skip PREPARE Phase in Batch"
option from menu and save project. Add project to Batch
processing and Start.

10. When complete, load project into Shrink and post-process. My
actual end result here was 4.41GB, which reflects my initial TG
calculation of 58MB (remember, the missed 26MB) and that hit it
right on the nose.

That's it. So, is there anything I could do to make this easier? Thanks...

yeah set the minimum_vts_size = 0, then you will see all of them (do a search in the forum)

then blank with segment editor

done

what jpripper said. Also, not sure why you are worrying about anything under 100mb. They won't affect quality in any noticable way.

well i can understand, i had a movie with like 100+ 20mb files.. thats 2gb worth

The "extras" disc on Monsters, Inc. was like that. It had about 75 VTS under the default threshold, combined for around 2 gigs of data.

See, that's what I needed. The reason I need that is so I nuke those small ones too! Thanks...

Now, if we had an easy way to specify target size. And I think I've seen some kind of reference to processing menus -- maybe on JDobb's todo list?

Have you looked into DVDRemakePro?

Have you looked into DVDRemakePro?With ReMake you can completly edit your dvd, it's really a great program, take a look at there site: DVDRemake (http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremakepro/index.php)

It's awesome.

Although DVDRB can blank extras. Have you ever looked at all the wasted MB's in the MAIN VTS's?

I've saved over 500 MB's on some movies PLUS blanking the extras :)

You can blank those too by unselecting "Extras Only" from the View/Edit menu...

I see some references here to DVDRemake, but what need does this fill here?

jdobbs..are you sure your understanding what I am stateing? (I would never insilt your intelligence or want you to think that bud :) )

I am saying inside the largest VTS (main movie), there are 100's of MB's of wasted space to recover. I've tried all the methods I thought in DVDRB..and I don;t believ eit can clip off the running credits cell at the end of a movie (seen over 400 MB's..just in the scrolling end credits !! ). I've removed all those begining movie production scrolls (WB logo, Castelrock...seen about 20-80 MB's there). Then..on a couple of movies..seen the advertisments (like for sienfeld)) INSIDE the main movie cell.

Thanks Bud,

Monte :helpful:

Well... I think that if you add:
vts_min_size=1

under [options] section on Rebuilder.ini file and... do what jdobbs said....

you'll be able to blank those segments.

I will look into it and see if I can manipulate and edit as easy As I can in DRM Pro

Thanks :cool:

I believe Mr. Monte is talking about cutting a cell. Were a portion of the main movie and a portion of the opening or closing credits (or a logo) are within a single cell. This is something DVdReMake is capable of doing (and VobBlanker I think). Were DVD-RB only blanks the whole cell.
