improving voice content on cam recording

How can I improve the quality of voices from a cam recording when I'm making a DVD?

could you give some more details:
what did you record (party, ceremony, concert, ...)?
what is the equipment you used (cheap/expensive cam, built-in or external mic)?
what is wrong with the voices (too quiet, distorted, drowned by other sounds)?
are you willing to use commecial software or just freeware (how much [if at all] do you wanna invest)?
