Split AVI/XViD files based on target size

Hello,

My problem is that i rip dvd's in more then 1 "disc". I want to store the avi files on 700 MB discs.
Lets say i have a good encode which is close to 1400 MB (a little less, but thats no problem.)

Now i need to split that file into 2 discs. I can do this with Nandub or Virtualdub based on time sliding.
This however, gives no accurate output size caus of the variable bitrate.
I need a tool which can exactly cut this 1 file into 2 files, each of the same size.

I searched, but i couldnt find it. Is there such a tool?

When you split an avi file in two, the last part should start on a keyframe. If you don't do that, the decoder will probably display garbage until it hits a keyframe.

Did you read my question? I know how to split, virtualdub/nandub are good for that.

BUT its only on timeline base, i need it on filesize base.

Well, I just tried to inform you that you need to split so that the second part starts on a keyframe. Vdub will let you split on a frame basis, but it's the xvid codec that makes the frametype desicions and that will limit where you can split. If you want a perfect second part, you must do this and that means you can't get two parts with exactly the same size unless there is a beautiful coincidence.

So yes, I read your question but I wanted you to split well. :)

edit: btw, I just checked and vdubmod will show you size information when you move the slider. Hope this helps.

press Control-J in Nandub, enter the size, hit enter. iirc (I haven't used it in ages), it'll automatically jump to an appropriate cut position.. and if that shouldn't be the case, hold down shift and press the <- or -> button to go to the previous/next keyframe.

Ctrl-shift-j in vdubmod, but you should cut at around 699 or 698, but you may need to tweak this number if there isn't an appropriate keyframe around there.

edit: btw, why use nandub? Isn't it horribly obsolete and only really suitable for div3?

why use nandub?it works just fine for cutting... GKnot for instance still uses it for cutting (and divx3 encoding of course).

Thought only nandub was used for cutting when you were encoding div3, but this was just an assumption on my part as I have not investigated it. :)
