convert .divx?

what is the .divx VOB file? Is it essentially an avi with divx encoding? Can it be converted to a different format, say mpeg or wmv?

Rename .divx to .avi and convert it to whatever you want.

I tried that. I tried virtualdub to convert to uncompressed avi and it said it could not decompress the file, error occured. I tried TMPGEnc but the video came out all green and pixilated. I do have divx 6.0 installed, and the .divx file is a VOD type file. Any ideas?

I am still having trouble with this. I rename the file to .avi. I open it with GSpot and it says it can read the file fine. But when I open the .avi with WMP the video is discolored and pixilated, like its encoded or something. I tried opening it with virtualdub 1.6 but it crashes. Is it because this is a VOD type divx file?

VOD??? Or did you mean VOB? Then answer is no. VOB is MPEG-2, .divx is MPEG-4.

OK, it crashes in WMP, but what about other players like VLC, BSPlayer, MPC etc? Also does it crash with VirtualDubMod and Nandub too?

Would be nice if you can manage to provide a sample (provided you are able to load it into VDM/Nandub). How did you manage to make this file anyways?

yes its a VOD...video on demand movie I purchased from vod.com that lasts for only a few days or something stupid. It crashed the nandub version of virtualdub. I'm getting the feeling these damn divx people really don't want you messing with their file so you can view it longer

Aha! The DRM infested DivX VOD (http://www.divxnetworks.com/solutions/drm/index.php)!! Yeah, which means it is a DRM infested AVI basically, and you can expect it to behave like it is doing now. Guess you got what you paid for. :p

Come to think of it, doesn't djscoop have the rights to Fair Use of the file he paid for? He paid for it, so he should be free to backup the file - isn't that what our forum stands for and believe in?

So did anyone manage to crack the DRM-laden VoD yet? There is an entire thread on cracking the DRM-laden wmv/wma.

In much the same way "fair-use" does not apply when renting say, a DVD or VHS movie from Blockbuster!

I see, that explains it. But maybe DXN cleverly squeezed in the concept of "rental" here, so no one in Doom9 will take a crack at it coz we are bound by our rules. Ah, my conspiracy theories..:D
