x264 optimizations for dual processors

currently I have 3Ghz P4 systems. I was looking into the dual-core intel Pentium Ds and the dual-core Athlon X2s. However, I would probably only be able to get Pentium D 820s or 830s or Athalon X2 4200s because the better versions cost more money. I need to do real-time recording. For x264 encoding, would i see a performance increase. I am currently able to record 320x240@20fps in real time. would I be able to record 640x480@20fps in real time if I upgrade?

Definitely not using the adaptive quantization, large number of b-frames and reference frames and RDO. And unless somebody has exactly what you're going to get and makes some tests, nobody can give you any thumbs up on specific combination of settings..

Both are really expensive...well.. my cpu cost 50% more than the 4200 so expensive is relative ;) the 4200 isn't really more expensive than the top of the line consumer single core AMD chip, the 4000 (FX is the series for enthusiasts).

the Athlon X2 3800+ was just made available... it costs much less and with a bit of overclocking it can reache the speeds of those more expensive models...
