DivX6 advantages?

Hi guys!
I just wondered if there are any advantages using DivX6 for my DVP630 SAP :confused:
I use XviD and now tested the TrailVersion of DivX6, but I saw no real improvements in fact the DivX encoder seems way slower then XviD. Will there be a CodecShootout including divX6??

Since XviD seems to be working fine on your standalone, I recommend you stick to XviD. I am waiting to see if DivX 7 will make me switch loyalties. :)

Will there be a CodecShootout including divX6??Eventually, yes. But with codecs have have multiple revisions a day I'm sure you'll understand that I can't adapt my schedule to release schedules of codec makers. And I do have a site and my own software to take care off as well.

Of course, I was just curious couse I realy liked the 04 shoot-out, but not as much as the doom9 site itself ;)

To my eyes, XviD and DivX are taking slightly differing paths now. While XviD is aiming for overall image quality, DivX is aiming for a general purpose codec which plays on almost all standalones (also improving quality with every version upgrade). Both are fine, except that my current needs require more image quality than anything else and thus XviD suits me fine. If and when DivX 7 comes, it needs to excel the then existing XviD build in my personal tests for me to switch over (which I doubt will happen).

Touching on the subject matter of this thread, if I have a standalone which works fine with XviD+its advanced features like GMC, QPEL, b-frames etc, then I don't see a reason why I should ever want to switch.

one of the advantages with divx is the ability of creating with divxconverter(needs more work) dvd's backups with multi switchable audio/subtitles tracks viewable in any divx certified player nowadays.

xvid cant do that,ogm cant, mkv cant.

so i think that alone is a big advantage

PS: before someone says that you can have multi audio/subs with ogm or mkv playback, i meant standalone playback not pc playback

if you have english as your first language i reckon this wont be a big advantage, but for me as european this is good stuff

and you can view it all without having to wait for the new divx players coming out at the end of the year because current ones already support this

oh my god. That's not a first time we are talking about that. You -CAN- put Xvid video to .Divx container.
Divx 7?? Hm ... not sure it will survive untill this moment .. Blue Ray HDDVD .. H.264 ..... No future at all
Unless Divx 7 will be H.264, but then no ASP .. no harware player .. no money

the .divx format is fine for standalones however the rate at which the .divx technology can grow as compared to mkv is much slower due to having to provide support for all current and future players. mkv may not be able to play on standalones but it's perfect for directshow playback with all .divx features and more. Perhaps eventually there will be directshow capable hardware. then everything will be good lol =P

you say it right when you talk about divx 7 falling behind if it remains a ASP codec. by this time next year the AVC technology will have progressed far beyond ASP. Supposing the HD-DVD and Blueray support AVC rendering divx will be left in the dust as a competing codec.

I dont like the converter.As far as I know its just a basic input-output-tool, where no settings could be altered and to my mind this takes away to much freedom in backing up DVD's. My Philips DVP630 SAP (DivX certified) plays my multiple audio XviD backups just fine (3 audio tracks in general), can handle sub's (but I don't use them) so if I didn't misunderstood you, these aren't realy advantages you mentioned. No offense, but my english isn't the best and I don't wanna sound arrogant or stuff, this was just my opinion :D

Strange that, how did you make the comparison, I ask because though I can't really tell much difference in quality, though not really compared that much, unlike DivX5 I found DivX 6 a lot quicker.
Just some quick VDMod 5 min movie length coding with standart XviD settings (ESS compatible) and DivX HT Profile at the different performence settings. Like I said, I couldn't tell much difference either in Quality (just compared the two files in a player,no convincing test ;) ) but my XviD coding runs in average at 50fps and DivX was slower. But I will do some "real" testing on my own when I've the time!

I use AVS2AVI and always get DIVX6 faster than XVID. XVID DXN profile, DIVX Home Theatre profile.

Not that much faster but quite significant when doing a few movies.

As long as I keep all the relevent settings the same between codecs I always get DIVX6 faster.

But this time I have to admit that DivX was doing a slightly better job in the green-nebular-thingy opening sequence. Xvid produced here the more visible blocks.
The opening fighting sequence was better handled by XviD, more details where preserved here. DivX6 produced here a more blurry, unsharp picture, best seen at walls and the stuff around.

hi Drj i forgot to mention that i stiil use drdivx for backups, i add subs by using a Fuse GUI called srt2bmp(available here at doom9) that wraps everything and in the end creats a divx6 file. at the moment divxconverter is bad but the question was about divx6 not divxconverter.

i think opinions will vary according to users needs
for example myself:
i need a backup format playable on standalones with multiple audio and multiple subs played properly

at the moment divx is the only one that satisfies my needs with the xsub format.

for peolpe that dont need subs i guess xvid will be their favourite
