Hi, After setteling on my XVID encoding quality I found that the video's I encode don't play smothly and that my CPU usage getting all tapped out is to blame. I have a Duron 1.3ghz with 256mb of ram which I plan to upgrade in the next week but are there ways to improve my video playback either at the encoding stage or through decoder settings.

I have seen many mentions of encoding at specific colorspaces and forcing the decoder to use a specific colorspace but I dont' know the differences between them or when to use what, Is there any guides that reference this?

The video play back in VirtualDubMod is perfect and seems to put almost no load on my PC but when I play in in Media Player Classic boom. I have tried FFDShow as well to see if it was not more effiecient than the XVID decoder (some people have said it is True/False ?)

Oh, I originaly thought it was an issue with my AC3 audio decodor. So I encoded the same clip without audio and same problem.

There is probably an issue with your computer - Media Player Classic will decode the video by using your processor, and if it's not up to snuff there's not much you can do. The proof is that it plays smooth with another player, since it's not putting the same load on your system. ffdshow is not any more efficient because it uses the same codecs - it just gives you more control.

i found VLC media player to be faster than MPC, so you might wanna try that player.

Are these high or standard resolution encodings? You could try using MPlayer, it's great:

The encoding is AS @ L5 range with quartarization set to 3. My point is that I need to know if there are ways to cut this back as if my video's are only going to be able to play on 2.4 and above machines I may switch to a less hungry codec. The fact that it plays fine in VirtualDubMod would indicate that my processor can handle it fine I am probably just running it on the wrong settings.

Downloading VLC player now will see if it makes a difference.

Ok the video is playing fine in VLC, its still using about 90% CPU though. So I would still be interested answers to my previous questions.
