View Full Version : Authoring from non-compliant mpg2 stream....

Hello,

I often capture programming from satellite to later author as DVD. Of course, the captures are not fully compliant, but all I normally have to do is use DVDPatcher to change the first header from 544x480 (the resolution that comes over the satellite) to 720x480. Unfortunately today I screwed up, and I'm wondering if there's some way I can save myself from failure here.....today I told DVDPatcher to edit ALL headers instead of just the first one. Having read some of the posts that came up from googling for an answer, I was lead to believe this wasn't a big deal....yet the DVD that came out of TMPGEnc DVD Author would not play, and even the raw stream itself only plays on a very few select softwares (unlike the untampered captures which tend to play in just about everything).

Why has choosing all headers rather than just the first one caused this catastrophe, and, is there a way to "fix" it?

Thanks,

It won't play because you can't lie to the decoder. Changing just the first header is enough for authoring software to accept the file, but the first half second or so doesn't decode properly. Change them all back, then change just the first to 720x480.

ok....i changed them all back to 544...haven't tried to re-author yet, but I just tried to play the file in PowerDVD again (which is my primary DVD software and ALWAYS plays my satellite captures) and it still won't play past the first 1/2 second or so.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that DVDPatcher would've changed all the headers to reflect a new bitrate as well? (actually I entered the new bitrate to be exactly what DVDPatcher reported for the original file, but of course it's only reporting from the first header, and NOT all the others would have been that bitrate).
