I have burned a number of movies to dvd with a lot of success but have never come across this problem or if i've had this problem before it's never been so apparent. I burned an avi to dvd using vso divxtodvd keeping the settings on automatic and the picture and audio quality is very good except when viewed on my standalone dvd. Quite a large portion of the picture is cut off from the left and right sides of the screen. Parts of the U and L in the universal logo screen have been croppped whether i view the movie in 16:9, 4:3, widescreen, superwide etc..
I check the preview in vso and the film isn't cropped. Any ideas folks?

seems like the stand alone for some reason pan&scans the video
but the settings you tried should be exactly the way to fix it

The burned movie plays properly on my pc if that is any help.
That's not Pan&Scan, that's simply Overscan. Combined with the fact, that nearly 95% of all AVI-Rips from DVDs do have a wrong AR, that's the normal result.

So how do i compensate for over scan, tmpgenc or is there another alternative?

or is there another alternative?
get a TV with lesser Overscan, or let someone adjust its overscan.
but *never* try to compensate overscan.
it'll look terrible on non-overscan displays...

So what you guys are saying is that the movie was encoded this way and if I try to correct it i will lose a lot of quality. Ok, I can live with a little of the picture missing. Spending another large one on a new telly is not an option.
Thanks for your time and thoughts guys.

Not exactly
But to be more sure, can you grab a still image from a well lit section of your source, without applying any AR correction (so it should either contain 720x480 or 720x576 pixels). And upload it please?

Virtaualdubmod can take a snapshot of a certain frame but what format should i save the shot in bmp,tga or png and do i just upload it with my next post?
Sorry , i haven't done this before.

If you can, save it or convert it as a .jpg file!
In this instance, the quality of the image is not what we are looking at. It's the position of the (black) mattes.
You can then use ImageShack (www.imageshack.us) to upload/display the image file on Doom9.

I can save the image as a .jpg file but the image doesn't show the black borders just the picture itself. I am capturing it with virtualdubmod. I go to video>snapshot source frame save it as a bmp file and then as a jpg file.

I have a copy of VSO's DivXtoDVD and it seems to work fine for me. That said I have not tried feeding it with anything other that 720x576 or 720x480 Mpeg4 sources.
What are the pixel frame sizes of the MPEG-4 sources you've fed DivXtoDVD with. And do any of the "problem" MPEG-4 sources contain mattes?

You could capture a screenshot, paste it into Paint and convert to a .jpeg while you're saving the image to file. To capture an individual window as opposed to your entire desktop, press Alt+PrtScr.
I mention the use of Microsoft Paint because you've got it on your system if you're running Windows, but actually, Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) is a much more powerful and flexible free image editor.

If thecrock has MediaPlayer Classic installed, he might find it easier to capture a still (or stills) from one of his problem MPEG-4 sources ;)
I use MPC most of the time for this sort of thing....
