Divx conflict with Xvid

Ive been having this problem for the last couple days on my new computer. I installed Xvid and everything was messed up so I changed the colorspace to 24RGB and everything played fine, but as soon as I install any version of Divx all my playback is grainy, intense color filled etc. Ive tried installing them both in different orders, screwing with my settings in them etc but nothing works. In Gspot ive looked at what codec is decoding what and all looks good, but still the crappy playback. Any Suggestions?

May I ask what is the purpose of installing both XviD and DivX? If the purpose is only for decoding, then you need install only one since both are MPEG-4 compatible and one will play the other.

I recommend XviD. Unless you wish to encode using DivX, uninstall it.

On my old computer I was always able to have both installed. I like Xvid but I also use Divx to encode.

You said you have tried "installing them both in different orders", but had you uninstalled both before reinstalling? If not, please try that first. Installing on top of an existing version a.k.a a "dirty install", can cause undesired effects.

If the issue persists still, can you open an XviD-avi in GraphEdit and post the screenshot here? Also one for a DivX-avi? Lets see how they are getting decoded.

As you can see it's the divx decoder which isn't properly setup (to add grain and so on).

Please head over to DivX and read up on that issue (or write about it). Thanks ;)

(You can also use a tool from radlight to change the filter meritts according to your preferences so that XviD gets decoded by xvid and divx by divx.)

@kylepro88, Try this -

uninstall DivX,
uninstall XviD,
install DivX and set it to decode only DivX while installation,
install XviD and set it to decode only XviD while installation.

There's no reason to use Divx for decoding Divx material since Xvid can do it perfectly. To avoid problems you should just disable decoding in Divx and use Xvid instead. Or then you can disable decoding in both of them and use ffdshow :D

@Episode, The author of the thread has stated that he does need DivX on his PC since he uses it for encoding. His bad experience started when he installed XviD, which got worse when he reinstalled DivX. So probably there was a major codec conflict (one grabbing decoding priority from the other, the other grabbing it back etc), at this point it is better to let DivX decode DivX and XviD decode XviD.

Don't confuse him any more. :)
