View Full Version : Setting a new value for the # of CCE passes?

I know I have read about changing the number of CCE passes from the default of "2" to something greater (3, 4, even 5).

I'd like to see the difference between a 2 and a 3 pass encode, but I can't figure out how to change the value! Could anyone provide some directions or advice for me please? In a simple, step-by-step manner preferably..... :)

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

speaking from a point where i have done 5 and 9 pass encodes apart from the extra time it takes there is no real reason to use the extra passes - unless you have a high end machine - stick to 3 (4) if its a long ass film like lotr

2 - 3 passes is more than enuff - although should you want to use more passes you can

Yeah, see, that's what I thought should do it too. However, when I try that, the number of passes (which is set to "2") can't be changed. The number/pulldown menu are grayed out, un-clickable.

I suppose I should have mentioned that before, sorry. How do I change that setting? Is there somewhere else I have to change something to make that option clickable?

Thanks for the help folks, and any further that can be offered.

you can change it in the ecl file if you want open it with notepad or wordpad and do a search and replace on

vbr_pass=2 - changing it to the number of passes you want

If you have CCE BASIC you can not modify the number of passes. CCE BASIC is limited to 2 passes

Ah, yes, it is Basic. I didn't realize the number of passes was fixed with that. And here I thought it was the "best" choice of the encoders, which is why I shelled out for it.

Would that ECL-Wordpad work-around idea do me any good then? Or is it a no-go there too?

It's the best choice among the commercial encoders for quality/cost ratio.

Anyway, I've never seen differences in doing more passes, and other encoders don't perform more than two passes.

Ah, well, thanks for the info folks. Much appreciated, hopefully I'll never need more than 2 passes. Haven't seemed to thus far, so yay!
