Hi
I have been recording dvd's for some time now. My dvd's play in my computer and on my other dvd player. I bought a JVC XV-S65 recently and it said in the auction that it plays dvd-r's. I have also looked up lists of players that play dvd-r's and this player was on it, but every time I try to play one of my recorded movies it gives an error and won't load. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I could be doing wrong or if there is a way to make this player work with dvd-r's. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks
Bryan

Welcome to the Forum, Bryan:

Outside of a straight media compatibility issue, the only thing that strikes me right off the bat is whether or not you "finalized" your discs in the recording step. Un-finalized discs will play in the device that created them, but rarely ever in anything else. Have you visited the manufacturer's website and run through their FAQ's and pertinent doc's?

Hi ammck and thanks for the quick reply. Yes my discs are finalized. I am using Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator, and it even comes up with a little box that says since there is more than 4 Gig on it then it has to finalize and I won't be able to put anything else on the dvd. They also play in my other stand alone dvd player, so I am pretty sure that is not the problem. I ended up looking up the manual on their website and it says that it won't play dvd-r's, but all the lists I have seen of the players that are supposed to play dvd-r'd say that it is compatible. Thanks

According to the Videohelp.com Database (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=JVC+XV-S65+&Submit=Search&Search=Search&chipset=&country=&orderby=Name&hits=25), it does seem to be picky about the media brands it will play. You might try some of the brands that other people have had success with.

You might also try out a different authoring and burning app. Personally, I wouldn't trust anything with the Roxio name on it.

Hi Bryan,

I have a very similar model XV-S60BK. It is possibly a slightly older model than yours. Plays dvd-R flawlessly, not +R.

Now I'm guessing, the other standalone player which plays your -R disk might be a newer model? El cheapo? Nowadays, no many dvd players adhere strictly to the specs which is a good thing most of the time.

I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with your disk. I have Nero's SHOWTIME software player which is pretty fussy(good!) and appreciated for its strictness. If it passes (my)quality tests then I won't have a problem with my 2 JVCs.

Just a quick thought; when using Roxio to burn, the only time I've ever seen the notice that the disc must be finalized because it's over 4GB is when burning a data DVD. Unless you've made the files ready beforehand, you may need to use a program more specifically for burning a video DVD, or you may need a program to set the book type of the disc. Google "dvd book type" or check your burner manufacturer's web site.
