Encoding SVCD-compliant MPG with QuEnc?

I would like to create a mpg file which is guaranteed to be 100% SVCD
compliant, using QuEnc (or something like it).

This is because I have tried to transfer some DV onto SVCD using QuEnc and
Nero Burning Rom, without success. Nero has a SVCD creation mode built-in,
where (supposedly) checks the MPG file for SVCD compliance. No matter what
QuEnc encoding settings I tried, Nero reported: "stream encoding is invalid
for SVCD". (I blame Nero for this completely vague error message!)

So, either QuEnc really has not created a valid file, or else Nero is
broken and does not know a valid file when it sees one. I would like to
know what is the real situation!

That is why I need to create a guaranteed 100% SVCD compliant PAL MPG file.
Then, if Nero does not accept it, I know that Nero is broken.

The AVS file for this test was easy, it is just this one line:

BlankClip(length=1000, pixel_type="YV12", width=480, height=576, fps=25,
color=$000000, audio_rate=44100, stereo=true, sixteen_bit=true)

However, the setup of QuEnc is hard because there are so many options and
combinations. I dont even remember what is the default any more. Does
anyone know the full settings to encode such a file?

Please demultiplex your mpeg2 and remultiplex it with bbmpeg as SVCD.
Maybe that is the problem.

Don't forget set "forced mux rate" = 0

Is it true then, that QuEnc cannot encode a MPG that can be put directly to SVCD..?

nero already complains when a header isn't is saying something else than it expects, that doesn't mean the content is wrong
trying different muxers and muxer-options might be your solution

also IMHO nobody in his/her/its right mind will tell you his/her/its program is "guaranteed 100% ... compliant"

i know that Nero complains about some SVCD mpegs. 2 solutions i know of that have worked for people.
first is to use something else such as Vcdeasy. i know people that have put mpegs in to that that nero has complained about and it(Vcdeasy) has produced and burnt perfectly fine working SVCD's.
second is to remux the mpeg with Tmpgencs mpeg tools. remux to its SVCD setting and again these files have been accepted by Nero.

If I was not so innocent, I would think Nero complains automatic about any file not encoded with Nero's own (commercial) mpeg2 extension ....!!

I will try the Tmpgenc remuxing trick... I already tried just about every combinaation possible of settings in QuEnc without success, thanks Emale...

I've had the same problem. I suspect nero doesn't like mpeg > 1 hour,because it doesn't complain about < hour. (appprox)

My solution is to use some program (don't remember the name) that takes a MPEG2 as input and creates a .bin /.cue , which can be burnt by Nero without any problem at all. (VCDImager was the name!)

I used the following settings: (the cross stands for "enabled")

MPEG-2 x
Use VBR x
High Quality x
Use Trellis Quant x
2 Pass Encoding x

Advanced Options:
MPEG-2 Only Settings:
(Interlaced Encoding x) (depends on the source material)
DC Presision: 8 (recommend for SVCDs)

Max Bitrate: 2524 ((MP2 Bitrate was 224) to guarantee 2x CDROM Reading speed)
(4:3 Aspect Ration)
Scene Detection

MPEG-2 Mux Profile: SVCD

With this options Nero was "satisfied" and everything worked quite well (DVD-Player).
Before I made some mistakes like choosing the wrong Mux-Profile (Nero did complain), the wrong Max Bitrate and the wrong DC Precision (DVD-Player had some problems) but I guess that the described options are now fairly standard conform (after some search in the Internet).

Remuxing with Tmpgenc failed because the MPEG2 license is required to remux already encoded MPEG2 stream! This surprised me.

I downloaded VCDeasy 1.1.5.2, and it gives some warnings about the audio track of the MPG encoded with QuEnc. MPEG-1 layer 2 is normally used for SVCD, does "MP2" in QuEnc mean MPEG-1 layer 2, or MPEG-2?

Borat, thanks for your suggestion. All my tracks were less than 1 hour (sometimes only a minute or so when I was testing!) and Nero still complained. Vcdimager is good though... VCDEasy is actually a GUI for Vcdimager.

OCCX, thanks for your suggestion too, I'll try this tonight and see if the audio errors go away.

"MPEG-1 layer 2" should normally be mp2 audio
