I am doing an xvid copy of movie house of flying daggers using gknot 0.28.7.
reading guides at doom9 i see it states that the bits/(pixel*frame) should be around 0.17 for best quality but the best i can get with no aspect ratio errors is about 0.39 is this good or bad? done a compressability test and the % is at 66 and states best between 40-60%... another thing too is that the W-ZOOM % is at like 98% is this ok? the source dvd is PAL 16:9 with AR of 2.35:1 in the res tab would it be better for me specify the AR of 2.35 or just select 16:9 PAL?
I have also come across something I am confused about the option in xvid twopasses 1st pass the tick box for discard first pass if this is ticked a compressibility test will not work should this be ticked or not?
tia for explanations :)

thanks again.

...using gknot 0.28.7....
Current release is 0.35.0.
...bits/(pixel*frame) should be around ...
Only as a starting point for your first compressibility test. After that, ignore the value, and instead, compare only percentages of b/(p*f) returned by tests.
..the best i can get with no aspect ratio error...
Since you should be using at least mod8 resolutions, and the recommended default is mod32/mod16, some small aspect error is both expected and normally unnoticable.
...the % is at 66 and states best between 40-60%...
Best practice has shown that there may be an increase in perceived quality above 60%, but going much beyond 80% may be "overkill" and merely increasing bitrate without significant improvements in perceived quality. YMMV, as this is always content dependant.
... better for me specify the AR of 2.35 or just select 16:9 PAL...
DVDs have either a 16:9 or a 4:3 Display Aspect Ratio, regardless of the aspect ratio of the content. Letterboxing and/or pillarboxing is used from that point to obtain the proper aspect ratio. Your cropping will "recover" the appropriate AR. So, if using DVD sources, select the correct DAR, either 4:3 or 16:9.
...when using divx 5 they look nice and smooth why is this...
I'm guessing a procedural difference. You'll have to provide GKnot logs for both types of encodings if you want a better explanation.
... will it play back ok when on my 16:9 widescreen tv?
The answer is, "it depends" -- It will depend on how you get the content to your widescreen TV -- the software and/or hardware used. For example, some standalone players will only show .avi in 480i/576i modes.
