View Full Version : Which audio/video codecs for lower bitrates?

This is more of a qualitative/opinion question: what codecs do you think are best at lower bitrates? I'm encoding anime that has already been encoded at around 170 MB (XviD/LAME MP3) to 70 MB, and I want to get the best quality that I can at that size, and a total encode time of no longer than 3 hours. So far I've found that XviD 1.1.0-beta2, VP7, and x264 all suit my needs fairly well, but I can't decide which one to use. XviD isn't as good quality from what I've seen (still fairly good though), but it's the quickest of the three, and only takes 50 minutes total using 2-pass and some of the more advanced settings enabled. VP7 is wonderful, producing smooth video that looks almost as good as the original, but I usually have to have the speed setting on 2 or 1, which takes 3 1/2 hours or more. And x264 is almost as good as VP7 when it comes to quality, and it only takes 1 hour and 20 minutes per episode, but the codec is buggy as hell for me, and crashes half the time and often when I use filters. If anyone can tell me which of the three video codecs is best to use, or a different codec, and the settings I should use, I would greatly appreciate it :)

For audio I've been using regular CBR MP3 at 56 or 64 Kbps and have found the quality to be pretty much exactly what I want. But if anyone knows if I can get the same (or nearly the same) at lower bitrates with any other codec, or get better quality at the same bitrate, please let me know. Sorry for the long newb post :D
