I have a person who wants to copy scenes from dvds(copyrighted or not, I do not know) to use as part of a powerpoint for some kind of presentations or teaching. Is there an easy way to do this, either with consumer software or freeware? I'm not sure I have time to hassle with this, but I thought that if there is an easy way, I could pass it along.
Thanks.

No really quick way to do it, but easy enough
Rip It (DVD Decryptor or similar)
Demux it (Vobedit)
Use ProjectX, Cuttermarin or PVAstrumento etc etc to cut out the bits you want, mux it , and Virtualdubmod to make it into an uncompressed AVI (huge, but safest way to do in powerpoint coz you dont know what codecs will be on any machine you may want to play it on)

Using DVDShrink is pretty quick and easy.
Open the DVD in re-author mode and set the start and stop points, then convert to whatever format you want (eg. FlaskMpeg)
Powerpoint works with MPEG1 which would probably be better than a uncompressed AVI filesize wise, and MPEG1 is fairly common.

maybe its sufficient to use some screenshots instead of complete scenes?
if your dvdplayer doesn`t support screenshots, use bsplayer to oben your dvd drive, play the .vob file with it and make screenshots by pressing the P button...
