Join two DVDs with preserving original menus

Are there freeware tools to join two completely different DVD on one DVD-R with preserving original menues ? The same way DVDRemake does it. I have tried DVDShrink, but original menues are gone. :confused:

Nothing is wrong with DVDRemake, but I don't need all its features, except joining two DVDs and keeping the original menues. I think to pay $30-50 for majority of the features that I never gonna use is way to much. I was wondering if I can do the same with another program. I can not believe that Dimad is the only person on this planet who figured out how to do it. :rolleyes:

Yes, it can be done without DVDremake. That depends on how much you know so far in dvd backup.

If you are a novice, then there's a steep learning curve ahead of you. If you are a champ then again you wouldn't ask this question, so I'm assuming you are the earlier.

So, keep this project on hold and start familarize yourself with DVDstyler, PgcEdit and VobBlanker. Then we shall resume the class a few days later perhaps? :)

You can always give up the menus if you want a simpler life and just backitup with dvdshrink.

I'm in the same situation as you, the only function I initially expect to use of DVDRemake is Joining Disc's (extra's from a couple of different disc's). I'm coming to the conclusion that Mr Monte is right in that it may still be worth the money, as it seems very tricky to do the same thing with free tools. :(

I haven't dived in just yet as I've been rather busy, and also feel that maybe I should first donate some more towards the authors of the free tools I use more frequently. :o

I was using MenuEdit (free) to fix menus after eliminating extras and logos, switched to DRMPro (50$) and never regret it. Now you can remove audio and subtitles as well, realy easy and perfect backups with original navigation. Download trial version and see for yourself.

An easy way is to use Nero Visio Express 3. Create a main menu and import your titles, it's very simple.

With your guides in japanese and Google translation I am getting somewhere. The reason I've started this thread was Season 3 of "In Living Color". Fox has decided to release it on the dual-sided DVD-5 discs. I personally hate flipper discs, so I want to join them into a one DVD-9 disc and burn onto DVD+R DL. The original menues must be preserved, otherwise I will have a mess selecting the right episode.

I've not actually got the output allthrough the process nor examined detail , but tested and confirmed several parts of the processes.
I think it is possible to simply join DVDs, by observing the strucure merged DVD by DvdReMakePro.

The feature of above method is to have New Title Menu which jump to each DISC,
to remain all contents, to be independent each DISC, and to remain reference in each DISC.
On the other hand, if wanting to have references between each DISC and not to have New Title Menu, it needs to more understanding about structure, to create New Buttons in existece Menu.

I have a slightly different approach which I have not tried yet:

Create a simple menu with DVDstyler with 2 buttons, the first named Chapter 1-15 and the second as Chapter 16-30.

Open Disc2 with VobBlanker and extract the SCENE SELECTION pgc and save.

Open Disc1 again with VobBlanker and work on the menus. Choose a couple of pgcs to be sacrificed/replaced with the DVDstyler-ed menu and the extracted disc2 pgc. Process the menu and save.

Prepare a folder with explorer and create a NEW DVD with PgcEdit and start adding the titles. Import the processed menus of Disc1. Adjust the links accordingly.

So, when I press the SCENE SELECTION button the DVDstyler-ed menu will pop up and branch these two buttons to the respective pgcs....

P.S. I hope our resident guide writer of a champ SWEETNESS would write a guide on this matter.

I **was** progressing quite well (using the general process summarised by jinjin_jp from examining DVDRemake's output) having imported the VTST's & VTSM's from second disc into the first. I have however hit a wall when it comes to adding the VMGM PGC's from the second disc after the VMGM PGC's of the first disc.

I can create dummy PGC's and paste in the appropriate commands, however I can't see a way to import the VOB contents as the Import VMGM function in PgcEdit wishes to overwrite the existing VMGM.

Anyone got any ideas on doing this, with PgcEdit or another program ? (excluding paid software as the idea is to test doing it with free/donationware)

Not easy, I'm affraid.
As PgcEdit doesn't process the VOBs, it is not possible to join two VMGMs with menus.
It should be possible to join the VOBs with PgcDemux/Muxman, but the manual work for retrieving the correct infos from the IFOs is even more complex: you have to take the VOBU pointers from the remuxed menu IFOs, and the commands from the original ones. Furthermore, Muxman is currently difficult to handle for menu buttons.

But take in mind that most of the time the VMGM is made only of warnings and logos (and dummies, of course). So, you should be able to blank out all PGCs of the VMGM of at least one of the original DVD, with the option to completely remove the VOB.
If you concat a blanked VMGM to the first one, the problem dissapear.

Wondering out loud here - and won't have chance to test for a couple of hours, but: :sly:

Possibly import the VMGM from disc two as a new VTSM in the combined disc (seem to recall something mentioned in PgcEdit instructions). I could then add dummy VMGM PGC's equal to each of the disc two VMGM PGC's. Commands could be copied over making all these added dummy PGC's work as intended. For those requiring actual video cells (ie not able to be blanked), the VMGM could jump to the (VMGM parading as a) VTSM to display cells, and then jump back to dummy VMGM PGC's and continue as intended (probably need some additional dummy PGC's to avoid invalid jumping within DVD).

Not pretty, or as clean as importing VTST & VTSM ( :thanks: r0lZ).

Will report back later tonight or tomorrow - promised to play with my son for a while.

That's correct, this method should work, but requires a lot of work. It is possible to import a VMGM menu as a VTSM menu with PgcEdit. Don't forget to change the Title menu to a Root menu (or something else)!

Also, I wonder what you will do if both the original DVDs does have a Title menu callable with the remote. Which one will you keep? Or will you jump to the DVD selection menu when the title button is pressed? And add two additional menu buttons to jump to the title menu of each DVD?

I figure the menu to choose DVD will be created in DVDStyler/DVDAuthorGUI and imported in as a new VTSM. Existing and new dummy VMGM's used to incorporate it into the command flow. Downside is that you end up back at this DVD selection menu when you probably really only want to go back to the title of the previously selected menu. Gets far too complex (for my brain anyway) trying to do it any other way, especially as I'm dealing with combined total of 27 VTS and well over 200 PGC's - both discs are DVD extras with original menu's. :eek: :scared: :eek: (Why haven't I been commited yet :confused: ).

Basically, I'm attempting to replicate as far as possible the arrangement used by Dimad. He doesn't use angles, empty gprm's or (from memory) language units to enable the joining. I need to put into VTSM some of the stuff that Dimad manages to join within the VMGM however.

Should help give me a better understanding of the DVD commands even if I never do it again.

Starting at the merged menu, you select DVD1, at any time in DVD1 you press Title menu the first time, you'll go to the Title menu of DVD1, if you press the second time, you'll go to the merged menu. And the cycle repeats. The same logic goes for DVD2. Of course, this logic works on as many DVDs you want to merge.

With this method tested, I notice when I press Title menu, depending on the conditions, it will either go to the very beginning as if the original DVD is first inserted (like going thru warnings, logos, commercials, etc) or just to the main menu, etc. So to me, it's just like pressing Root menu. If you like this method, I will elaborate the steps. Most of the work is done with the merging -- adding/deleting pgc, adjusting navigation, and dealing with content (if any) in VMGM, since your focus is to make use of freeware.

btw, instead of importing the merge menu in VMGM, you can import as a new VTS which is already created by the authoring tool. Adjust navigation accordingly.

For the disc's I'm working on I realised I won't need to bring in anything from VIDEO_TS.VOB on second disc as after removal of crap, it's only a language selection menu left. I always edit these in PgcEdit to autoselect the English button anyway so will just adjust the pre commands instead.

I've created additional dummy VMGM PGC's in the combined disc and pasted in the VMGM commands from disc two for now. Will investigate importing VMGM into VTSM on next project.

OK, I've joined my first two DVD's :D, and tested successfully on WinDVD. I still need to shrink it slightly so I can burn and test on stand alone though. Anyway, I hereby present the long winded process:
Create copy of disc one and disc two (extra protection against totally screwing it up)
Open disc one in PgcEdit
Import VTST Titles from disc two
ensure you select to copy or move the VOBs when prompted
need to take note of the old title numbers and their respective new title numbers as you need to update commands later
Import VTSM Menus from disc two
for each imported VTST, select it then Import Menu from original disc two
ensure you select to copy or move the VOBs when prompted
VMGM PGC's
select VMGM and create a new dummy PGC
delete NOP command and copy commands from disc one VMG First-Play PGC to this new dummy PGC (write down its number as this is what you need to link to later from your new disc selection menu to play disc one)
select VMGM and create another new dummy PGC, deleting it's NOP command
Open disc two in another instance of PgcEdit (only to enable you to copy VMGM commands - you don't make any changes to it)
copy commands from disc two VMG First-Play PGC to this new dummy PGC (write down its number as this is what you need to link to later from your new disc selection menu to play disc two)
select VMGM and create additional new dummy PGC's for each VMGM PGC appearing in disc two (deleting NOP commands in each)
copy commands from disc two VMGM PGC's to these new dummy PGC's
Fix navigation
select VMG First Play PGC and use 'Go to calling 'command' to identify any 'Jump to VMGM First Play PGC' commands throughout the DVD. Those from disc one should be changed to jump to the first dummy VMGM PGC added (5b). Those from disc two should be changed to jump to the second dummy VMGM PGC added (5e).
find existing TitleM menu and use 'Go to calling 'command' to identify any 'Jump to VMGM Title' commands throughout the DVD. Those from disc one should be changed to jump to the VMGM using the PGC number not via use of the 'Title' reference. Those from disc two should be changed to jump to the VMGM which was flagged as TitleM in the original disc two (ensuring you use it's new 'joined disc' PGC number in the commands).
select VMGM and create another new dummy PGC
change the NOP command to Jump to First Play PGC
set this PGC as the new TitleM menu
go through each added/imported VMGM, VTST, and VTSM and adjust commands to point to the new VMGM PGC numbers (they will all be increased by the same number - equivalent to the PGC number where you pasted the VMG First Play PGC commands from disc two (5e))
go through each added/imported VMGM and adjust commands to point to the new VTS numbers (they will all be increased by the same number - equivalent to the number of VTS's in the original disc one)
go through each added/imported VMGM, VTST, and VTSM and adjust commands to point to the new title numbers (refer to list from start of the process or compare back to original disc two - note they will most likely not all be increased by the same number as title numbers in original disc are probably not in the same numerical order as the VTS's, however on importing them earlier, they would have been renumbered into numerical order)
check each added/imported menu/bov button and update them to point to the new VMGM/VTS numbers as required.
Create Disc selection menu
use your favourite authoring program (e.g. DVDAuthorGUI) to create a dummy DVD containing a titleset menu designed to suit your joined DVD - i.e. a page with two buttons (make it as generic or customised as you like)
Import VTST title from your dummy DVD, but don't copy or move the VOB
Import VTSM Menu from your dummy DVD, and copy/move VOB
remove all commands from this VTS except for possibly the set button highlight in the pre command section of VTSM containing the menu
flag the VTSM containing your disc selection menu as root menu
edit menu buttons to jump to the VMGM PGC's acting as pseudo First Play PGC's for disc's one and two (5b & 5e respectively)
Replace all existing commands in the 'real' VMG First Play PGC with (a) set gprm commands to zero out gprm's 0-15, then (b) jump command to VTSM root menu containing your new disc selection menu
Save and test DVD

Note that with above arrangement, pressing the Title button on the remote will take you back to the Disc Selection menu. This is in fact the only way back to the menu.

Commands could be added/changed such that the first press of Title button takes you back to the title of the DVD you are watching and a second press within a given time would take you back to the disc selection menu (requires understanding the flow of the specific DVD you are dealing with and possibly an unused gprm). Using the root menu button would probably suffice to back out to the main menu of the selected DVD in most cases.

Above assumes that all VMGM PGC's in disc two have been processed through PgcEdit or VobBlanker such that there are no video cells remaining in VIDEO_TS which need to be copied over to the joined disc (unless there were none to start with of course).

If however you instead progress to play something in that disc, the next title button press would take to to that disc title menu again first.

This seems slightly different to your example, I think (I've got a headache at the moment so may not be tracing it properly). Your example on second press from anywhere in disc would take you immediately back to Disc Selection menu.

To adapt your commands to work as I was thinking would simply require changing the last two listed commands to be the first command in the post command section of the respective disc's title menu.

Unfortunately, on most (all?) players, the Title Menu and the Root menu buttons are used to resume to the title domain when you press them while you are already in a menu domain. So, instead of jumping to the main title menu, you will jump to the last played title.
Note that pressing the title menu button agan after the resume should return to the title menu again, and this time the method will probably work. So, you may have to press the Title menu button 3 times to go to the selection menu.
Of course, another method is to open and close the tray, but the GPRMs values will be lost.

I think you should be able to use the GoUpPGC link to use the Return button to go back to the main DVD selection menu while you are in the main Root or Title menu of DVD 1 or 2. This should work in all cases, unless the GoUpPGCN link is already used for another purpose. And I'm not sure there is a Return button on all remotes.

Pre commands (no change from above)
From 6c-e Title menu, insert these 2 conditions before Jump to First Play PGC. I'll use gprm(4) as unused register.
if ( gprm(4) == 1) then { LinkPGCN PGC 1 } Title menu of original DVD1.
if ( gprm(4) == 2) then { LinkPGCN PGC # } Title menu of original DVD2 (from 5f)
In VMG PGC 1 (title menu of DVD1), insert gprm(4)=0 as first line.
In VMG PGC # (5f title menu of DVD2), insert gprm(4)=0 as first line.
Following command need to be placed either as first Pre command in all the PGC's the command flow goes to after pressing a button on the disc's main menu, OR if the disc main menu button commands are LinkTail commands then the follow command needs to be placed as first command in Post command section of the disc main menu.
For disc one, insert gprm(4)=1 as first line.
For disc two, insert gprm(4)=2 as first line.
A trace of the disc may be required as the complexity of some disc commands makes it difficult to cover all flow possibilities by just looking at the commands in isolation. A possible help may be to add the set gprm(4)=0 command as the first line in the PGC containing the disc's main menu.

I think you should be able to use the GoUpPGC link to use the Return button to go back to the main DVD selection menu while you are in the main Root or Title menu of DVD 1 or 2. This should work in all cases, unless the GoUpPGCN link is already used for another purpose. And I'm not sure there is a Return button on all remotes.GoUpPGC link only works within the same VTS domain, not across VTS domain esp. the disc selection menu is on a separate VTS, unless, of course, there's a link to VMG Title menu in that PGC. But then you may have to modify this for a lot of PGCs. One of my remotes does not have a Return button, since I don't see it labeled "Return". All I see is Title, Menu, and Resume.

Your example on second press from anywhere in disc would take you immediately back to Disc Selection menu.This is what I intend it to be. I have already tested this on 2 complex merged dvds, and they work as described. Say you're on DVD1, either you're at any type of menu or you're playing some title, first press of Title menu button will take you to the menu, usually main menu; second press will take you to the disc selection menu (Title menu).

You're starting to make this way complicated. No need to trace all commands in the disc. There's also another way, how 'bout while you're playing some title on DVD1, and you press Title menu button, then it will always take you to the Title menu of DVD1 (VMG PGC 1). Only if you're in any type of menu (of DVD1) and you press Title menu button, then it will always take you to the disc selection menu. This will require a bit more work but not that complicated.

Personally, I like the first method better since it's simple.

For someone not wanting to go to so much trouble, your process provides a good level of functionality. :goodpost:

Personally, I like the functionality resulting from my process in post 36, and am happy to spend the extra time to set up and test it, if I'm already spending the time manually joining the discs.

Don't know how often I'll actually do all this though - it can be a lot of work joining the dvd's, especially considering how cheap the blanks are.

The Resume button is the Return button. It may also be labelled Go Up, or with a broken arrow like the Enter symbol on most keyboards.

I attempted to do it on a disk and your tutorial was pretty straight foward. although i did notice (a little thing) you said to correct vts jumps (6g) for vmgm,vtst, vtsm.. while vts jumps are only possible from vmgm(which includes firstplay).. except for 'vts 0' for vtsm but that wouldnt need adjusting.

Hehe. well.. what i have is 2 disks.. the first one is an interactive dvd with only 4 vts_XX's but tons of playback titles. (like 90 or so...) so didnt leave much for the last disk which only had 15 but was still too many.. id have to chalk it up as an exception.

6f is sorta the same deal.. you can only jump to a vmgm-pgc by number from the vmgm/fp. (you can only jumpss to the titlem from anyplace else)..

im gonna try to make an auto-it script to automate your process. open up dvd1 and dvd2 and menu in separate windows and the script will merge.. we'll see how it goes

I make back ups that are 2 gb or smaller (most of the time) using DVD Rebuilder (just menus and movie/half D1 all, CCE SP 2.67) and, when the vid is about 90 mins, I will keep the ac3 audio, but when the vid is closer to 2 hours, I transcode the audio to mp2. Has anyone else noticed that it does not seem possible to mix different audio formats on the same dvd using DVD Remake Pro? Whenever I try to mix audio formats, I get an error message that says there was a problem loading the video - see log for details, and the log says "Read DVD from: Y:\VIDEO_TS, Read VMG, vmgi_last_sector * 2 <= vmg_last_sector (976:VMG.cpp), can't load VMG." I don't get the same error message when I combine 2 mp2 format backups. Any settings I can adjust in DVD Remake Pro to allow me to combine different audio formats? Any other ideas?

First off let me state that I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to DVD technical terms so please excuse me if I don't use the correct terms.
I'm trying to merge three 1.4GB mini-DVDs created with my Sony DVR-403 camcorder. These DVDs have their own menus and I would like to merge these into one regular DVD. DVD RemakePro does this exactly (tried their demo) but I'm not going to be able to buy the s/w, maybe it's just me but I think it is too pricey for what it does.
I tried following the steps listed in this thread but I got stuck at one point. The original DVD menu images are stored in a cell in VIDEO_TS.VOB, each menu image has it's own vobid in that cell. Starting with 2 DVDs I tried vobmerge to merge the 2 VOBs and tried some additional tweaks using IFOedit to add the new info, I think I came prety close but for some reason PGCEdit does not correctly recognize the 2nd part of the merged cell.
Can you guys help me out?

Welcome to the forum, bboons.

Merging several VTSM menus is not easy.
The problem is not with the concatenation of the VOB cells. You can do that with VobEdit's Join Clips function. But it will create new IFOs, and loose the original commands.
You may export the commands with PgcEdit (File -> Export all PGC commands), then rename the VMGM files from disc 2 and 3, create as many dummy PGCs you need, and import the commands back. At this point, you will have to fix the commands imported from disc 2 and 3 to point to the right VMGM PGC numbers.
Heavy work, and subject to errors.

IMO, it is probably easier to make a completely new menu with an authoring program.

Maybe it's also possible to use DVD Remake demo to generate the menu. The titles will be truncated, but you should be able to create the compilation as explained in this guide, and import the VMGM menu and the VTSM commands of the DVD generated by DRM with PgcEdit.

Hi, bboons, welcome.

You should be able to bring in your existing menu's with the following process.

To create a new VTST to hold the menu from disc 1: File --> Import VTST Titles and select a small VTST from an existing disc (don't copy/move the vob)
We need to fix the missing Titles VOB, so highlight new VTS, select Blank Out All VTST Titles, with the options to replace the titles by a black frame, and don't kill playback. A new 10Kb VOB will be created by PgcEdit, keeping it all nice and legal (thanks r0lZ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=684910#post684910))
To import your menu, highlight the new VTS: Menu --> Import Menu and choose the VIDEO_TS.IFO containing your disc 1 menu (select to copy the vob)
Dependant upon your source VIDEO_TS, this may bring in additional PGC's that you don't want. You could kill playback / remove commands as necessary to just leave you with the desired menu in the new VTS.
Repeat for each additional menu.

The only issue I can see is that there are certain rules about which commands can be used within VMGM's (where your original menu's were sitting) and VTSM's (where they now sit). You may need to play with the commands a bit to get it correct. I don't profess to know the specs in this regard (as evidenced by earlier (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=685895#post685895) posts in this thread).

Having said the above, for the non commercial menu's you're working with, I'd be seriously considering r0lZ suggestion of creating new menu's in an authoring program. You could probably come up with a nicer menu, possibly even using clips from your titles themselves.

Thanks zacoz, I'll try that. BTW, The menus created by the camcorder are really good with clips, dates etc. For archiving it is really good to have the dates on the menu along with each clip. Besides, the one time I authored my own DVD menus (while it turned out great) it took quite some time and I don't think I can afford to spend that much time on each DVD.

There is a TV series DVD, 4 episodes was originally on 1 disc (dvd-9). But it was merged so, that either dvd (dvd-5) contains the original menu, but from the disc one episode 3 and 4 are blanked, and from disc 2, episode 1 and 2.

These blanked episodes are titles, but they don't have any cells.

My question is, how can I add chapters, and of course cells, to these titles. And not last, can I assing the vob ids/cells to these cells?

Because I would like to use vobblanker to replace these blanked titles.

Zacoz, I tried your suggestion in post #52 and it works. It is pretty laborious though because of the command conversions from VMGM domain to VTSM domain.
Going back to my original question: Using freeware tools is there a way to merge two "VIDEO_TS.VOB"s and also generate a corrsponding IFO that has the merged menu information ?. Vobmerge seems to do the job of merging two VOBs but then it does not do any IFO fixes.

Mate, I didn't understand what they said at all. Here is a guide that's REAL specific.

outline the steps needed to reauthor misfits series 1 dvd set containing 6 episodes and extras into one dvd containing 6 episodes. Original dvds are DISC1 7gb 4 episodes, DISC2 6gb 2 episodes + extras. DISCS are PAL and set up to display for wide screen tvs and 4:3 tvs (as letterbox). No pan and scan option. DISC1 has some titles at 704*576. The rest are 720*576

Step 1: Copy the two discs to hard drive

Start k9copy
Copy both disks to hard drive. No compression.
Save to MISFITSFULL/DISC1
Save to MISFITSFULL/DISC2

The combined size of both discs is about 13gb

Copy both disks to hard drive. Compress video 3:1 leave menus 1:1
Save to MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC1
Save to MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC2

The combined size of both discs is about 5.4gb

DISC1 contains 7 vts vts 2-5 are episodes 1-4, vts6 is a warning clip, vts7 is a logo clip.
DISC2 contains 23 vts. vts 2 and vts 23 are episodes 5 and 6.

Shrunk discs will be used as a source of the structure, navigation and menus of the dvd.
Full discs will be used as a source for encoding video.

The advantage of shrinking the disc is all navigation burn testing can be done with normal rewritable dvds.
When burn testing is complete encoded video is added and final output burnt to dual layered dvd.

Step 2: Import Titles

Start pgcedit.
Open MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC1.
Import title MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC2/VTS_02_1.IFO
Import title MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC2/VTS_23_1.IFO
Import the root menus of vts 2 and vts 23.
Rearrange the titles so that vts2-7 contain the episodes 1-6.
Save.

DISC1 main menu contains four buttons: Play All, Episodes, Scenes, Subtitles
The main menu doesn't need to be changed.

There is no menu for Scene 5 and Scene 6
Clone pgc for Scene 4 8button TWICE and rearrange to be under pgcs for Scene menus 1-4.

Alter code of new cloned pgcs to work for the two new titles.

Select PGC for SCENE menu episode 5 8 Button.
Click REPLACE and choose REMUX/episode5PREVIOUS/VTS_O1_1.VOB.

Each menu button points to a pgc. The two imported Menus point to the wrong pgcs. Look where the menu for episode 4 points. Clone that pgc twice and rearrange to be under the original pgc. Edit the button pointers for the two imported menus to point to the two cloned pgcs.

The pgcs that the SCENE menu buttons point to were originally intended to handle 4 titles. Need to edit them to deal with the two extra titles.

Pgcedit provides useful aids REARRANGE PGC, TRACE, and CLONE PGC.
Once the trace works save and test with software player that can handle dvd menus.

Use a graphic editor edit episodes5Button.bmp Add "EPISODE 5" and "EPISODE 6" to the bitmap. Save as episodes7Button.bmp

Now use pgcedit to edit the menu buttons. Each button has two sets of sizes, one for letterbox, one for normal(widescreen) Make sure size and position changes are applied to both button sizes at the same time.
Start editing by repositioning and resizing original 5 buttons. Then copy a button and paste it into the menu and reposition it. Do the same for the seventh button. Check button navigation.
Save.

Test highlights with software media player that displays dvd menus.

Edit EPISODES menu:Part3 - Add Titles
The Episodes menu selects four titles. Need to link it to two more titles.
Need to trace through what happens when say episode 3 button is clicked. Follow the pattern difference between episode clicks and clone extra pgcs and continue the pattern for the extra two titles. The pgcs were originally written for 4 titles so they need to be extended to handle six episodes.

Once the trace works properly test with a software player.

Step 4: Play All menu.
Play All menu should play the first four titles. In pgcedit Trace through the structure to find the patterns and clone new pgcs or edit pgcs to add the extra two titles.

When the Trace works save and test with software media player.

Step 5: Create ISO
Open DISC1 with pgcedit.
From pgcedit's file menu select create iso/burn.
Save as DISC1.ISO

The resulting iso should be small enough to fit on a rewritable dvd R5.

Step 6: Burn
Start imgburn. Choose Burn Image to Disc
Select DISC1.ISO and burn.

Step 7: Import Titles

Each episode is between 45 - 48 minutes long. All have annoying "this is what's happened so far" and "this is what will happen next time" clips. They need to be removed. Perhaps it makes sense when the series is broadcast but it makes no sense to have reminders and teasers in the series dvd.

All reminders, teasers and gratuitous logos will be removed.The episode and credits will be kept. Subtitles and audio will remain in sync. Video will be encoded once. Audio and subtitles will be copied.

Start pgcedit.
Open MISFITSFULL/DISC1
Import the two vts episodes from MISFITSFULL/DISC2.
Import the two root menus for the episodes from MISFITSFULL/DISC2
Rearrange the vts so the episodes are in vts 2-7
Delete all vts from 8-23
Save

Step 8: Edit Title
Part 1: Edit Title: Cut and Split Titles:

Start vobblanker.
Open MISFITSFULL/DISC1/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO
Untick process menus, remove puos.
Tick use source folder.

Select vts 2 and click CELLS

There are seven cells representing the seven chapters of episode.
Because this is episode one there is no "reminder clip".
The last chapter is .12 seconds long
Select the second last chapter and press SPLIT

Before anything else untick add program chapter. This can not be ticked and unticked willy nilly.
If you forget to do it at the beginning cancel everything and reopen MISFITSFULL/DISC1

Scan through the preview till the first frame of the "teaser"
Press MARK
Scan through the preview till the first frame of the credits begins.
Press MARK
Scan through the preview till the first frame of the "gratuitous logo" begins
Press MARK, OK. APPLY

Select vts 3 and click CELLS
Select the first chapter and press PREV/CUT

?Untick add program chapter?
Select cut.
At the start of the cell click START MARK
Scan through the cell till the end of the "reminder". Click FINISH MARK
Click OK

The last cell is .12 seconds long.
Select the second last cell.
Click SPLIT

Untick add program chapter

Scan through the preview till the first frame of the "teaser"
Press MARK
Scan through the preview till the first frame of the credits begins.
Press MARK
Scan through the preview till the first frame of the "gratuitous logo" begins
Press MARK, OK. APPLY

Do the same for the next four episodes.

Finally press PROCESS.

Step 8: Edit Title
Part 2: Edit Title: Blank Title:

Reopen MISFITSFULL/DISC1/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO
Untick process menus, remove puos
Tick process titles, Use input folder

Select title 2
Click CELLS
There are now ten cells
Select the first cell that has no program associated. Preview it - it should be the "teaser" clip
Press BLANK
Preview the next cell. It should be the credits clip
Preview the next cell. It should be the "gratuitous logo" clip.
Press BLANK

Click APPLY

Select title 3
Click CELLS
Select the first cell that has no program associated. Preview it - it should be the "teaser" clip
Press BLANK
Preview the next cell. It should be the credits clip
Preview the next cell. It should be the "gratuitous logo" clip.
Press BLANK

Click APPLY

Do the same for the next four episodes.

Click PROCESS.

Part 3: Edit Title: Extract Video, Audio, Cell Times, Subtitles

Start Pgcdemux.
Open MISFITSFULL/DISC1/VIDEO_TS/VTS_02_1.IFO
Select by VobID
From the drop down box choose the whole episode
Extract Audio, Cell Times, Subtitles, Log to DEMUX/EPISODE1

Open MISFITSFULL/DISC1/VIDEO_TS/VTS_03_1.IFO
Select by VobID
From the drop down box choose the whole episode
Extract Audio, Cell Times, Subtitles, Log to DEMUX/EPISODE2

Do the same for the next four episodes

Part 4: Edit Title: Encode video

The encoded video must be dvd compliant. Make sure you encode the audio as well as the video otherwise the encoder might be tempted to drop some frames. Audio attached to encoded video wont be used.

Select subtitle: stream1: DEMUX/EPISODE1/Subpicture_20.sup (letterbox and wide)
Save to REMUX/EPISODE1

Restart Muxman.
Select video: DEMUX/EPISODE2/episode2.m2v (720*576,letterbox only)
Select audio: DEMUX/EPISODE2/AudioFile_80.ac3 (English)
Select subtitle: stream1: DEMUX/EPISODE2/Subpicture_20.sup (letterbox and wide)
Save to REMUX/EPISODE2

Do the same for the next four episodes

(Note Muxman has the ability to import cell times but I had no luck with that approach.)

Part 7: Edit Title: Save Chapter Times

Start Pgcedit.
Open MISFITSFULL/DISC1
Double click vts2 Title 2
View cell times as hhh:mmm:sss
Save cell times to REMUX/EPISODE1/chapters1.txt

Double click vts3 Title 3
View cell times as hhh:mmm:sss
Save cell times to REMUX/EPISODE2/chapters2.txt

Do the same for the next four episodes

Start Vobblanker

Open REMUX/EPISODE1/VTS_01_1.IFO
Untick process menus, remove puos
Tick use input folder, process titles
Select title 1
Click CELLS
Select cell 1, there is only one cell.

Using REMUX/EPISODE1/chapters1.txt as a guide scan through the cell and mark the split points
Click OK, APPLY, PROCESS

Open REMUX/EPISODE2/VTS_01_1.IFO

Tick use input folder, process titles
Select title 1
Click CELLS
Select cell 1, there is only one cell.
Click SPLIT
Before anything else make sure add chapters programs is ticked.
Using REMUX/EPISODE2/chapters2.txt as a guide scan through the cell and mark the split points
Click OK, APPLY, PROCESS

Do the same for the next four episodes

The REMUX folders now contain episodes with correct video, audio, subtitles, chapter points. Wrong color scheme.

Step 8: Edit Title
Part 9: Edit Title: Replace Titles.

Start Pgcedit.

Open MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC1
Select Title 2
From the file menu choose Replace Vts Titles
Replace with REMUX/EPISODE1/VTS_01_1.IFO
Go with default answers except:
When asked to backup say no.
When asked to move or copy vob say copy.

Select Title 3
From the file menu choose Replace Vts Titles
Replace with REMUX/EPISODE2/VTS_01_1.IFO
Go with default answers except:
When asked to backup say no.
When asked to move or copy vob say copy.

Do the same for the next four episodes

Step 8: Fixvts
Start fixvts
Open MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC1
Choose to fix whole disk in place, no backup

Step 9: Burn

Start pgcedit

Open MISFITSSHRUNK/DISC1
From the file menu choose Create ISO/Burn
Pgcedit will work out where to place the layer change.
Follow the defaults and save as MISFITS.ISO

Start Imgburn
Choose burn image
Open MISFITS.ISO
Burn.

There you go.


Some lessons learned.

Editing the EPISODES menu is too much work. The smart thing to do is not touch the EPISODES menu. Navigation to episodes 5 and 6 can be achieved through SCENE menu and the amount of work involved is dramatically reduced.

Before trying to do this I knew nothing about DVD Authoring. I still know nothing.
