Do you use 'CQ tester' applications?

I wonder how many users of this board regularly use a tool which determines a quality level via spot sampling and nested intervals. In this case, I would also like to know, which CQ-tool and encoder combination you prefer.

depending on how smart the 2-pass mode is on the encoder app, i'll prefer 2-pass. however, with TMPGenc i've had better luck with auto-q type apps (well, actually i guessed the CQ myself by doing very short encodes of "representative" parts of the movie).

for xvid/quenc/x264 there is really no contest between the 2 methods though. 2-pass will win. i only use CQ modes for these encoders if CPU time is more precious than quality (like if the target bitrate is high enough to absorb any encoding oddities)...

That's the same way i'm doing this. But i'm not changing just CQ, i'm also changing Max. and Min. Bitrate.

So at least, you do not yet know CQ Kurve (http://www.fr-an.de/soft/p02/index.htm) by Fr_An (currently for TMPGEnc only -- yet)...

Unfortunately, it is currently only available in German, but developing.

I can tell you my opinion why I'm doing OPV. It takes the half time. It is almost the same Quality as if You do 2Pass.

I've fun in coding. So I did one for CCE and one for HC.

Last Year I coded one for QuEnc, MEncoder and FreeEnc. It was called EasySVCD/DVD 0.62, but I don't develop it further.

Now I'll take a look into AutoQMatEnc. Maybe this one will be a little bit faster than the other libavcodec based Encs.
