I have a Sony DDU 1621 right now and it sucks. It locks up during pretty much every dvd movie I've tried to play with it. Anybody has this problem with this drive too?

I'm planning to get a new drive too. What would be a good one without dvd playback problems?

For the budget conscious, LG and LiteOn have a good following. I have also has good results with Pioneer drives. For what it's worth, I am not too fond of my current Toshiba drive. (It has mechanical issues--tray won't open every time when you push the button, etc.)

That Sony you have is just a re-badged LiteOn! I have the same and it's not that bad, but reads discs nowhere near as well as my NEC 3520A or my Asus 52x CD burner. Are you using hacked firmware or anything?

Yes, I'm using hacked firmware but I installed it just a week ago and I didn't notice any differences in performance or better playback. What firmware version are you using?
