I've encoded a dvd into a avi file.

Unfortunately, i encoded the file with a resolution that is too high, it won't fit onto my cd.

thus I'd like to reduce the resolution of the current avi file. I'm aiming to cut down from 1.2gb into 400mb.

I couldn't find a program that would do this.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Reencode the DVD. If you try to lower the res of the avi and then reencode the quality will get way worse.

There are lots of programs able to do that - IŽd recommend VirtualDub.
Use VIDEO->FILTER->resize to change the resolution, then VIDEO->COMPRESSION->codec to use a codec(otherwise it gets uncompressed) and set a bitrate that fits your needs.
You could try to only change the bitrate, then the resolution would stay the same, though quality might suffer.
The point, however, is that resolution does not equal filesize - bitrate equals filesize.
