View Full Version : which product to supplement DVDDecrypter?

My understanding is that the wonderful DVDDecrypter program - that is used to back up legally purchased DVDs - will at some point in the future begin to fail for some DVDs.

I'm gathering there are 2 possible ways around this.

1. generate a PSL file for the DVD that DVDDecrypter can use.

2. Purchase a 3rd party program (from DVDIdle or AnyDVD), and make the following changes to DVDDecrypter

a. Use ElbyCDIO as the I/O model.
b. Disable the structural protection removal in DVDDecrypter.

---
My questions are:

1. Is there a program that can generate the PSL files needed by DVDDecrypter? I'm unclear on how to do this.

2. If statement (2) above is correct, which of these program should be purchased, and what is the URL to the vendor (hate to end up purchasing a Macrovision installer).

BTW - my hat is off to author of DVDDecrypter! Very professionally done and certainly helped many make legal copies of their DVDs - that were in danger due to small children or the accidents that will inevitably happen during normal usage.

He is certainly a gentleman and a scholar!

You should read this link here. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=95712) It tells you where to get AnyDVD. Use the "Here" link in the first post in that thread. It will take you to the correct website, only.

The only problem is AnyDVD is not freeware.

DVDIdle relased a freeware version - this version is just crap if you want to use the files in DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2. So stay away from them.

I found another program - Magic DVD Ripper - that first looked as a pure toy - but the odd thing was that it works very well with recent released ARccOS discs. Tried with both Suspect Zero and Resident Evil (both region 2 discs) and no problems in either DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2. RE gave you a problem with an unreferences .VOB file - but that's an old bug and not really Magic's fault.

What problems have you run into with DVDFab Decrypter so far? Not that I'm saying you're wrong, please understand (I'm still testing 'Fab out for myself)... just currious. So far in my *very limited* experience with 'Fab, the only bump I've run into is that the 'Fab-created files take ages to import in DVD Remake, for whatever reason.

Hi writersblock29. I have test it on some DVDs.

For 'regular' DVDs without ARccOS it works with DVD Shrink - but then that program can handle such DVDs by itself.

For the ARccOS ones - there was a change in 'something'. Region 1 DVDs seems to be easier to handle. I have only tested on region 2 DVDs.

I have tried with two ARccOS discs:

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (region code 2,4,5)

Suspect Zero (region code 2,4,5)No, this program can't deliver files that DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2 likes.

Both DVDs gave the same error message if you try to open them in DVD Shrink (open file mode).

Resident Evil gives this error message in Nero Recode 2:

http://img100.echo.cx/img100/8228/errornero2um.png

(Translation note: 'Det finns inga fler filer.' = There are no more files.)

Suspect Zero crashes during the encoding phase with an out of memory error in Nero Recode 2.

The only thing you can use this program for in Nero Recode 2 is to do a 'Recode Main Movie to DVD'. This also works very well. No black intro or any other problems with the replay.

But then again - the be a worthy replacer to DVD Decrypter - it needs to be developed more to be usefull if you want to use it with either DVD Shrink or Nero Recode 2.

@cynthia_old

Thanks for the info! I'm in Region 1 land (USA), but it'd be interesting to see how DVDFab handles the Region 1 versions of these disks...

Agreed. DVD Decrypter certainly spoiled us for a long time, and those won't be easy shoes for another program to fill!

DVDFab Decrypter is not nearly the program the DDecrypter was. (Thanks Lightning UK).

However, if you want an easy work around to use DVD Shrink with DVDFab output. Use ImgTool and create an image and load in to Daemon Tools. DVD Shrink can read the files from the mounted image just fine.

Actually, I was hoping to continue to use DVD Decrypter - but with the addition of some 3rd party tool (don't mind paying) to handle whatever new stuff the movie companies are going to throw at us to keep us from copying legally purchased movies.

I was hoping to get some feedback on how to generate a PSL file for DVD Decrypter - or which 3rd party tool could be used with it (see original post).

I did a new 'test' on how to create a PSL file. It's very confusing. But I was able to make a working PSL file for the old DVD Decrypter version 3.5.2.0 that just gave me I/O errors without a PSL file.

I couldn't use the final release - that one worked... :)

cynthia_old - Wow! Very detailed explanations - that certainly answers my question about the PSL files.

What about when/if they come out with some new perversion of the DVD standard?

I understand that the author of DVD Decrypter had just broken a new encryption scheme from Macrovision - before they put the kibosh on him - and we won't see that in a new release of DVD Decrypter.

Can a 3rd party tools (such as AnyDvd, etc. not sure which is best regarded) be used to give DVD Decrypter the ability to deal with this new scheme?

The only new thing from that  company is Rip Guard. I have not seen it on any DVD yet - so I doubt that LUK could have been dealing with that.

Time will tell what this Rip Guard is. ARccOS was suposed to be 100% sure when it was launched - so who knows.

Have to speak up in favour of this free ripper! :)

I've been trying to rip disc 4 of PAL R2 Season 4 Seinfeld set and nothing would rip this disc! Keep getting "invalid DVD structure" warnings from DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter struggled on 2 Vob files and could not rip it, even the combo of AnyDVD/CloneDVD said no way Hose as I suspected it would.

So thought what the heck and d/l DVDFab Decrypter to give a try as a last atempt, worked perfect on 2 systems to rip this troublesome disc. Just processing the ripped files now through DVD-Rebuilder & CCE on a 1 pass VBR and all seems to be chugging along nicely so here's hoping it can do it. I will definitely use DVDFab Decrypter again when DVD Decrypter cannot handle a poorly structured DVD. :)

And see when I tried to use DVDFab on the R1 Casino: 10th Anniversary Edition, it would stop on VTS_01_4.VOB and go no further.

I also tried to create a PSL file like Cynthia has mentioned, but I was getting a read rate of maybe 1 KB/s. How long did it take you to rip your DVD's Cynthia?

My experiment took 03:35:34 in time.

You should look in the log file for this

W 04:57:17 Possible Structure Protection Found!
W 04:57:17 1 area has been marked as 'suspect'.
W 04:57:17 Dummy sectors will be inserted where necessary. Do you have that warning message in your log file? If not - I doubt there is ARccOS on it.

Checked the log file and your right, there isn't any structure protection found on it. I did find someone with the exact same problem in afterdawns forum though
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/201457
but it seems that he got his disc to work after washing it off. The thing I find odd about this is that the disc is a flipper and both sides will stop at 50% giving me a CIRC Unrecovered Error. So maybe its just some poorly made media.
