BlockBuster filter...what is it for?

What is this filter for? Does it help in reducing blocks?
If so anyone what are the recommended parameters?

Actually Blockbuster does not smooth or soften, it adds noise to the picture. It does both Gaussian Noise and Dither.

Sometimes in flat areas (like a background wall) there will be contour noise. Some people also refer to this as "dancing dark blocks". The technical term is DCT blocks. Whatever you call it, it is really annoying.

Blockbuster is designed to help prevent it by putting noise (detail) into the flat areas. If you are encoding a video that already has contour noise then blockbuster might help to mask it.

Blockbuster is good is because it is adaptive. It only adds noise in the flat areas. A comparable filter AddGrain adds noise to the whole picture.

Blockbuster comes with a readme that will descibe what it does in detail and how to set the parameters.


Like I said Blockbuster is for reducing and eliminating DCT blocks. This is not the same as macoblocking or pixelation like you find in low bitrate encodes. To get rid of those blocks you would use the filters BlindPP or SmoothD.
