a very bad source ... need some help

the beast is called : musa, the warrior (pal version). from now on, it is my first candidate for the 'worst dvd ever released' contest. it has all the problems of 'bad pal conversion' which makes a real 'gourmand' to lick the lips. the much time i waste for it the more i'm conviced they simply used a kinda convertfpstopal(blend=maybe).resizetopal(sharp=true).grabthemoney(all=of course) conversion. oh yeah, and it's oversharpened, just to make all the craps clearly visible. is there anyone having any experinece with this dvd ?

before u start advising :
- i brushed up my mind by having read through as many threads as i could. (i live in a pal country, so (de)interlacing is not an everyday problem here around. at least, not for me)
- i tried all the 'simple' techniques and filters advised here and there but any of them helped
- i even tried such heavy-guns like restore24 but it produced the same

some questions (which may help). what do the nexts indicate ?
- separated fields show heavy banding (mainly on the y-plane), and thus, the deinterlaced frames show it too
- separated fields shows strange artifacts seeming as they were originating from the other half
- scans (vertical and horizontal) produce very strange ghosting effects; doubling and even tripling which suddenly gets joined (and thus clear) but after awhile starts over. this 'effect' does not show a pattern on the frame-scale but rather longer sequences follow each other.
- ...

having wasted a week or so for it i don't expect to much. i'd be pretty happy if i could reach the lowest limit of 'watchability'.

btw, is there anyone having a non-pal version of this dvd ? (afaik, it's korean by origin.) what quality has it ? i guess, that can't be a masterpiece either. or is it possible to make such shit from a good source ?

Rather that wasting a week (or more), why not just order the NTSC release from Amazon? At $9.99 used, it's a gamble I'd take I think, rather than waste my time with an inferior source. If the NTSC version is just as bad, then you've wasted $10.

Rather that wasting a week (or more), why not just order the NTSC release from Amazon?yep ... i've just checked amazon, d'ye know, 'what if ...' :p ten bucks is still too much, anyway, if it goes down to the half, i wont hesitate anymore :p (and then my very next question will be what to do w/an ntsc dvd here in a very pal country ;) )

however, it's rather a challenge than a nuisance for me. but just feel a little bit lost as i'm quite unexperinced w/such sources

This is my opinion:

Don't try restoring to film (if that is what you were trying to do).

Too many blended frames.

Of course, you could try, but I believe that the result would be very "jerky."

what country is this one from? i have a sneaking suspicion this one came out of my workplace :)

lots of asian films have confusion as to their native standard. hong kong is PAL, but do their DVDs in NTSC. same with china and most of asia except japan. this means DVDs that don't originate from this area might have come off weird sources to say the least.

however, the good news is the Hong Kong DVDs are always pretty good. they'll have DTS (not that that's good... it's just big) and a really nice master. they usually have english subs too, though often there's some amusing typos and errors in them (allyourbase-ese), they're always understandable.

[edit] however, this shouldn't stop you buying PAL movies :) titles with bigger budgets will always look awesome.

also, it'd help if you filled out the "location" part of your sig so we get a better idea of what region you're in and hence what DVD release you'd have - they're all different.

what country is this one from? i have a sneaking suspicion this one came out of my workplace :)definitely not :D it was released by 'intersonic' a small slovakian or chech(?) company. it seems they do not intend worldwide distribution.

ye know, it's a shame of 'big' companies (say, sony :D ) that they release blockbusters only. (ok, mostly, and here around only) sg i wouldn't waste even a pence for. i can watch them 5-10x a year on the tv but i can rent them for some cents in the rents next door. (in most of them i'm a regular and thus a priviledged visitor, getting even heavy discounts too ;) )

all my dvds are 'rarity' (dunno the correct english world) released in limited number and sometimes in ... khm... 'limited quality'. i've learnt to live w/it but this piece is below my acceptance limit somehow.

anyway, i got two other dvds from this company (baraka and zatoichi, the samurai) they seem to be ok. not 'the best ever' but far much better than this.
also, it'd help if you filled out the "location" part of your sig so we get a better idea of what region you're in and hence what DVD release you'd have - they're all different.hmmm ... u mean sg like "i'm in ur anime, blendin' ur fields" or so ? ;) if it really helps i figure out sg really striking :D
