I'm in the process of buying a new dvd recorder. I can buy a cheap Philips which uses dvd +r or a more expensive Panasonic which uses dvd ram. I've been advised that dvd ram is a lot more flexible for recording, but does it justify the extra cost?

Sorry, maybe this should be under Hardware. I've just noticed the section.

If your recording movies, go with a DVD-R+R recorder for playback compatabilty issues. DVD-Ram is Not widely used.

P.S. Maybe a moderator will move this thread to the Hardware players forum where you will get more information.

DVD-RAM is used mainly for high speed back-up of files - they are incompatible with almost all standalone DVD players, much more expensive and less secure than regular DVD-ROM. The only real use it has is if you back up a lot of files on a regular basis and want to reuse the same disc over and over. It's also a cartridge-type media, and even though you can pop the cartridge open and play it on some DVD drives, one single fingerprint on the surface will ruin it (which is why it's in a cartridge).
