I have a DVD player that plays AVI files directly. I have some AVI files that are widescreen and would like to play them on my widescreen tv. When I play them, it assumes that they are 4:3 files and letterboxes them. I know that I can convert them to 16:9 dvd files, but I would prefer to keep them in AVI format so I can have more movies on the disc.
So my question is, can one of u guys that are good at math tell me the correct formula to resize these files so they show correctly on my tv?
Thanks in advance.

Your player doesn't use an ESS chipset does it?

Since your player assumes 4:3 as display output, the width will get stretched by 4/3 to fill the screen, because (4/3)*(4:3) = 16:9
So you have to multiply the height also by 4/3, thus preserving the original AR when it is output to the tv screen
Also don't forget to keep both height and width mod16
For example, if your original video is 640x272, you have to resize it to 640x368
Of course that means that if you want correct AR when playing it on your computer you will have to resize it at playback time

thanks....seems to work. however i now have a very small black border around the entire image. i am using virtualdub to resize, is it introducing this space into the picture when it resizes it? and if so, how do i stop it from doing this?

No, it shouldn't introduce black borders
Which version are you using and how are you configuring the resize filter?
It should be noted also that most widescreen tv sets have ARC (aspect ratio control), which many times is able to correct the discrepancy in the aspect ratio
Check your tv set manual for something similar to that

dvp642 is ESS based and as I understand it they have issues with widescreen output.

The original file is 592x320, i first resized it to 592x432 and had the black space around the image. I then resized it to 640x464 and that seems to be better, there is just a bit of letterboxing, which is probably correct given the dimensions. I guess if I would have resized it to 640x480 it would have filled the screen, but the resolution would have been slightly off. The player is supposed to resize avi files to fit the tv, but maybe it didnt like the 592 for some reason.
