Hi,
I'd like to put some of my divx/xvid movies on to vcd or dvd to play in my DVD player which unfortunately doesn't support avi or svcd.
I'm learning to use DVD2SVCD at the moment but am not sure what settings to use and whether to go for a couple of vcds or a single dvd.
If anyone could recommend some settings and whether I should go the vcd or dvd route then I would be very grateful.
Thanks.

Go with DVD, i didn't get very good results with vcd, much better with svcd-but as you say your player doesn't support the format. With dvd you really don't have to worry to much about your settings. VSO copytodvd is a good choice of burning software as it has an option for divxtodvd which is pretty quick, i also use nero and get good results.

VCD resolution is 352 x 240 (NTSC) while DVD is 720 x 480 (NTSC)...4 times the resolution of VCD. Depending on the quality of your original file, VCD might be "good enough to watch" but not necessarily something you'd want to keep in that format.
I'd get some re-writable media and try one VCD and one DVD of the same source file (you don't even have to encode the whole thing, maybe the first five minutes) and see which one is acceptable.
I have some DVD's made from AVI sources which look as good as DVD (to me, on my television) or close enough. It's what YOU like that will make that decision for you..

DVDs can also contain VCD-resolution material, the standard doesn't only include 720*480, but also a bunch of other resolutions.
That said, I don't see why DVDs should come at a higher cost than VCDs. Apart from the burner (a one-time investment), there's no big difference between using 2 cd-rs or 1 dvd-r ... as Paulcat said, try both and see which one you prefer. Watching on a pc will show you the quality differences more clearly, standard TVs are much more forgiving.

I had a pile of (Legal) SVCD's from Asia (very popular format over there). Converted them to DVD coz I hated having to change disks half way through a movie, worked very well, on normal TV cant tell the difference, but on my High Def TV it is noticable, but no worse than watching the old analogue TV!
So my recommendation wither bunf em onto DVD or see if you can buy a DivX compatable DVD player, there are a few around now.
