if you're creating a DVD±R from a store bought DVD, if you don't touch the flag, you couldn't make a VHS copy of your DVD copy.
is this true? I actually never tried nor read about this, just feeling curious.. anyway, if it's true then why can't I open vobs from a pressed dvd while I can from a ripped one?

is this true? I actually never tried nor read about this, just feeling curious..I have an old Apex player in a closet that is macrovision disabled.
In the past firmware hacks often included this "bug fix", along with all region and PUO blindness. It less frequent now, people are content with the factory codes to set their player to R0.
Rarely, DVD players/recorders come out of the factory macrovision disabled, but it happen.
Of course, not all pressed DVDs have the macrovision flag either.

thnxBecause they're encrypted. That has nothing to do with macrovision. Macrovision is a very dumb approach to copy prevention, it break the analog signal in a way that most CTRs will not react to, but most VCRs will try to "fix" and end up with an unwatchable pulsating image. With VHS tapes, macrovision is integrated in the recorded signal, but in DVDs it's just a flag that tell DVD players to corrupt the analog output with macrovision.

As far as I know CSS and Macrovision are two different types of protection. DVD Decrypter has the option to remove Macrovision protection but it isn't mandatory so therefore you could create a backup which when played wouldn't allow you to record to VHS.
