I would like to backup my copy of this DVD, and would like to keep all alternate endings - using AutoGK (XviD) or AutoRV10.

I figure easiest way I could get everything backed up is if I either encode basically the whole movie 5 times, or encode to a certain file size, then, in AutoGK's case use it's file input to encode the endings separately, and appends. Or maybe I should just make an extras encodings with all the alternate endings, not ideal though.

What method do you guys recommend?

(If only there was a way in which to create a branching structure for some container (like MKV?) which could seamlessly alternate between endings, and all you needed to do was have a simple text only menu to chose which end branch/track ID would be taken. Maybe there's something already like that?)

Thanks for your time :)

Isn't this is a purely subjective question? So, answer is - depends on what you prefer.

If I were you, I'd grab the chapters from the IFO using ChapterXtractor and use a container like OGM or MKV which supports chapters. Standalone playback becomes iffy though, unless your standalone supports OGM/MKV and chapters.

I mainly would like to know exactly how I go about doing things. Should I transfer DVD files over to HDD using File or IFO mode? How would I make it so I have one 1400MB MKV file (will probably need to be 2100MB) where I can select to play the theatrical version right through, completely, to the end or select to play 1 of the other four versions completely through from beginning to a different end? I would like things to be seamless.

My media player is Xbox Media Center, it supports the latest developments in MPlayer.

I am going to give ChapterXtractor a go, I might be able to work things out through a little trial and error.

Is it possible? Hhmm, I'm quite uncertain how to approach things. How would ChapterXtractor aid me?

I would like only to keep the alternate endings.

So like I encode the theatrical version into XviD + AC3, then I encode just the 4 other endings, not the whole movie again, (using AutoGK's file mode perhaps) into XviD + AC3. Now I pack all those in 1 MKV. How would I be able to select the version I'd like to watch? Is there some way to index or something? Will ChapterXtractor help me in this situation? Is it possible?
