View Full Version : .mkv to avi

Ok, I have been using Virtual Dub Mod for about a year now to change .ogm/.mkv containers into .avi file to play on my home divx player. I just recently came across a few mkv files that I get wierd errors on when trying to save to .avi or demuxing the .ogg sound.
Now I recently formatted and basically only installed Gknot codec's and the rippack. I tested a .ogm file and it worked perfectly so I'm not sure what the problem could be.
Here are the two errors I get.
Demux Error (http://www.s94987322.onlinehome.us/images/error1.JPG)
Save as avi error (http://www.s94987322.onlinehome.us/images/error2.JPG)
It says the file could be corrupt, yet they play perfect.
Anyhow if anyone can help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it. Or suggest another solution to changing .mkv file to .avi without using vdubmod.
Thanks

Try to open it in AviMuxGui. And btw, what are the video/audio formats inside these mkv's?

Well I opened the file in AVI-Mux GUI and right clicked on it and did an info and this is what I came up with for info. But also first of all I went ahead and dragged the file and dropped then started it and it only lets me save as an .mkv file still. Which I then tried the new file to see if it would work in Vdubmod yet the same error. Anyhow here is the info I got from AVI-Mux GUI.

Ahah. I see. So, there's no hack yet atm for creating an avi w/ ogg audio.
What you need to do is to extract desirable audio stream(s) and to convert it to some
more avi-compatible format like mp3(i'd prefer aac as a good compromise between quality/compression). Perhaps you'll need to extract single video stream 1st,
coz avimuxguy sometimes denies to create avi's from mkv's(but you can try anyway, it wont harm). Embedded subs also may cause glitches in some
players, it could be better to save them independently.
PS.: If you're going to watch it on standalone player, convert audio to mp3,
unless it supports aac, which i doubt.

Pretty much all I want to do is demux the sound to .ogg, convert to .mp3 (for standalone player), save .mkv as .avi(no sound) then just put the avi and mp3 together. I have done it before with .mkv files just ever since I reformatted my pc I get the error message above in my links when trying to demux or save as .avi . Is it possible I am missing a codec? As for avi-mux it's not letting me save as an .avi as well. Here is some more file info from vdubmod.

As i said, uncheck audio stream becoz it's not compatible w/ avi, therefore
it wont let you save.

The only possible problem saving to avi could be a vfr video stream. But it's not
the case here.

Ok, now I have a soundless .avi file. Which is one step closer to where I want to be. Now I just need to get the .ogg audio file out of the container. From there I just turn it to a .mp3. Is there any other way to extract the .ogg file from the container? Thanks for the help so far.

Right-click on audio stream -> extract binary.

Ok, extracted sound worked perfect with my first file. Now for some reason with the other files its like 1-2secs delayed with the video. Checked original files thikning maybe they could be off, but they aren't. Here is what I am doing exactly.
Dragging file over then extracting to ogg then converting ogg to mp3 with BeSweet. No ideal why its not working when the first one ended up being perfect.

mencoder -ovc copy -oac mp3lame -aid # input.mkv -o output.avi
Re-encode audio and remux video in one go. Use -lameopts to set lame settings and -aid to specify which audio stream to convert.

good call celtic_druid.. you have to transcode the ogg to mp3 format for avi compatibility.
I know this is counter productive, but maybe this should encourage you to think about some kind of home theater PC setup?
Or even set yourself up with Xbox Media Center, which can handel almost any single format you throw at it.
MPEG4 compat. DVD players are a nice idea, but way too prone to obsolescence.

Actually ffmpeg can mux vorbis in avi's. I could only get it to playback with ffplay though.

That Vorbis in AVI thing is a bit silly though, as it can cause more overhead than the size of the stream itself. :)

Re-encode audio and remux video in one go. Use -lameopts to set lame settings and -aid to specify which audio stream to convert.
With no knowledge of mencoder's existance I figured this out and it worked perfectly. This entire time I have been taking multible steps using Vdubmod then making the ogg to mp3's all manually then using vdubmod to put the files back together. This simple command worked perfect once I figured what it meant. input.mkv had to be inside the same folder as mencoder for this to work.
As for the media center deal I have thought about just modding my xbox since it would save alot of time in general. Plus I don't think you can possibly beat what the xbox can do modded with XBMC installed for the price.
Anyhow thanks for the help everyone I greatly appreciate it.
