Maybe there's already an answer to my question, but I wasn't able to find it.
I want to know this: is it possible to convert from DivX3 to DivX5 (or better, to ISO-MPEG4))? If it is possible, how can I do it?
Tnx!

Afaik, almost any encoding application like virtualdub for instance is able to
convert between divx3 and divx5(just install divx5.xx codec).
Then open source file, configure compression and save target file as(...).
But what's the goal? It'll only degrade quality imho.

I'm sorry, I want to say to do it WITHOUT rencoding the video, I know that it's useless to encode from a lossy format to another lossy format.
I've read somewhere that in theory it's possible, is it true?

indeed! great that people didnt forget about this, as it indeed rocks to be able to convert losslessly from divx3 to mpeg-4
a shame that it hasnt been comitted to the official ffmpeg cvs!
can one apply it to other codec, even the HD?
what do you mean?

@Mr_Khyron, Thank you. Never knew before so good to know. I stand corrected. :) Never use DivX 3.11a anymore though :P
@bond, Reading that thread, you seem to have fallen in love with the tool. :) Agree that this should be committed to CVS. One drawback of the tool ofcourse is that it can't output ASP, but only SP.

its not a drawback, divx3 simply isnt equivalent to ASP, but only to SP

So it's possible! Thank you Mr_Khyron! What should i do? I've downloaded the ffmpeg, but I'm not able to install it, I've read the docs, and I'm trying to install it with MSYS, but I'm not able to do it, can you help me?
P.S.: isn't there any windows installer for this tool?

Hi!
Thank you again Mr_Khyron! It works! I've some playback problem with the outputted avi (I can play it only with VLC), but after I've remuxed it into an mp4 with Yamb it works very well!
I have a suggestion: can you put an advertisement on the section of the new file container? because in this way you can remux all your DivX3 to mp4.
P.S.:but what are the differences between M$ MPEG-4 and ISO MPEG-4?

Can this program be used to convert from divx3.11 into dx50 (divx5/6)?

Convert as already discussed, then change the fourCC to DX50 or you should be able to just set it to use DX50 when converting.

Using ffmpeg.exe (...) to convert from divx3.11 to mp4 and avic.exe to change FourCC to DX50 and to mux it with xsub using srt2bmp&fuse.exe result in playable video file with subtitle on my Samsung Certified Divx player.
My question is : if my video file is 950kbps(video) and 64kbps(audio) and that is = 700MB , what i need to write to ffmpeg to have same video file size after convertion?
Can you write me example like:
ffmpeg.exe -i input.avi -vcodec mpeg4 ..... -acodec copy -mstomp4 output.avi
Tnx a LOT

The line is written in the read me, anyway it's this: ffmpeg -i inputdivx3.avi -vcodec mpeg4 -acodec copy -mstomp4 outputmpeg4.avi
I'm not sure that it will be the same size, I have a little different size (a little bigger), but I reduce them muxing the file in MP4, but if you don't want to mux your M$ MPEG-4 in MP4 there isn't reason to make this, I think.

I thought that using some kind of swithces i can force ffmpeg to use constant bitrate during convertion to avoid bigger size of outmpeg4 file.
Can u tell me how to mux the file in mp4 and reduce size?

It will be 1-2% bigger there is no switch to make it smaller.

I'm sorry for the absence, I use Yamb to remux it into MP4, I'm not an expert with FFMPEG....
anyway I don't see reason to convert M$ MPEG-4 to ISO-MPEG-4 if you don't want to remux it into MP4, but if you need it...

Why do I in the first place need to convert from MStoMP4? Because my standalone DVD player doesnt support .divx files that includes divx3.11+xsub, it only support .divx with divx5.x+xsub.
:(
