I have heard lately the craze over this ritek or ridata. I myself have always used Verbatims (white tops) and Fujis (japans) without one problem, not one coaster, well not untill scratches got on it which was my fault anywho. I have a NEC 3500A DVD Burner which I plan to break in, in a couple of days. My brother works at Best Buy so I can get deals on DVD Media, the types they have there is to my memory- TDK, memorex, Verbatim, Sony, Fuji, Dynex, and Panasonic. I can tell you right now that Dynex is definitly second rate. But I want to entertain the thoughts of the people on this fourm on which they had the best experieces with. I know EVERYONE will say TAIYO YUDEN is the best, but that aint at best buy and plus they are way to expensive compared to the others according to newegg. Ive heard not so good things about memorex, some bad things about sony, nothing of panasonic, good with verbatims and fujis, and TDK I never used. Any information would be appreciated Thanks guys

for one thing, the rules say not to ask "what's best" because that is so often a subjective thing... but that isn't too important with this question.

burning DVDs (and to a lesser extent CDs) requires not just good media, but a drive that can get along with that media. Sony and Lite-On drives are notorious for screwing up -R burns, but they're fine for +R media.

i'm not sure how the NEC drives fare (i'm a pioneer boy myself, but i get a bit annoyed at the 108's Z-CLV write strategy, as it severely limits burning speed and the zones have different error-rates), but you can find out pretty much everything you need to know at:

http://club.cdfreaks.com

my personal experience with media is: TDK discs are pretty good (in spite of being made by CMC magnetics which has a bad rep, but has improved a lot lately), verbatims are mostly Mitsubishi discs, which are supposed to be very good (no coasters yet, but the "thermal printable" discs are not good in inkjets - the colour shrivels until it's unreadable).

Ritek are a tricky one - they have a goor reputation for grade A media, but their grade B is terrible.

VDSPMSAB 01 is the stuff of nightmares. avoid like the plague - the discs are even slightly bent in the spindle and don't sit properly with other discs (this means they are very likely to have tracking problems, but that's the least of their probs).

get "DVD identifier" to see what discs you really have (then google the media code, or search cdfreaks).

just a short note: actually two :P

1) mug funky's right, do not ask what's best - read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) for details.

2) i also own a nec 3500A and am very satisfied with it. i have burnt around 100 memorex DVD-R and a handfull of verbatims without any problems... i also had mixed results with a 10 pack of fuji media, but i guess those weren't really grad A media... anyway, SONY work too but are really overpriced - at least where i'm from...

generally said, the nec drive is rather forgiving when it comes to media, but make sure you do not burn at the highest possible speed with cheaper media, this can lead to some nasty results :)
