Hi,

I am completely new to the whole video-editing field. I want to take some sections of DVD movies & mix them with some home video. I will be using Adobe Premiere. However, I need to get the DVD movie sections into AVI (or MPEG, etc) format so that I can import them into Premiere.

What application would I use to convert the DVD move sections? All advice welcome.

I'm still looking for an easy way but for now I use the old dvd2avi and make a selection in the vobfile then demux it to avi uncompressed and audio (dd-> decode), u still have to set the DAR, or you get "the long face". But there are many tools out there, (check the Digital TV section in the download section)
If you find an easy one that wil select a scene right from dvdrom and demux it in to avi and wav, please let me know.

Since you may want to select scenes from any part of a DVD film, you'd like to use the easiet-to-use Auto Gordian Knot. You can download it from here (http://www.autogk.me.uk/). This will give you an MPEG4 video in .avi container, which then you can cut with VirtualDubMod (http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/virtualdubmod/VirtualDubMod_1_5_10_1_All_inclusive.zip).

ACK! Premiere does not react well to Divx or any other MPEG4 material for that matter. While it is possible to edit Divx stuff in Premiere the results can be strange when you export the final footage. What you need to do is convert the footage you wish to edit into an .avi that uses an "editing" codec such as huffyuv or DV.

Hi all.
I am very interested in this topic. Concerning converting to an editing codec like huffyux or DV, does VDubMod or GKnot do that or ... is there a recommended program for doing so. I've seen the results of trying to edit DivX (In Adobe Premiere). Not good.
Thanks

The "best"? Uhh, ease, speed, quality, it all depends. Look at any of the encoding guides for help, though.
