I'm probably gonna get the Phillips Divx player. I've got a question about the ess compatibility option and the bitrate option during the autogk installation. I read that those are for xvid, but will it make any difference if I install those and encode in divx? Or is it better not to install it if I plan on using mainly divx. I might try encoding some xvid files, so should I just install them? I just want to know what's best for divx files. If the options don't affect divx I'll just install them, if not I won't. Please help
thanks.
One more question about audio. Is it ok to set the audio to auto? Or is it better to do CBR, VBR? This is for playback on the phillips divx player.
Thanks

bitrate spikes control should also affect DivX.
for what concerns the audio setup, auto should be always ok unless you want particular settings.

Thanks for the help.
What about the ess compatibility thing? Will it matter if I installed that and I encode divx files to play on the Phillips divx player?
Thanks

ESS option has got nothing to do with DivX. It only affects XviD and forces AutoGK to choose an ESS standalone friendly matrix like MPEG or H.263.

So even if I installed the ess option, it won't do anything to the divx files and they'll work in the Phillips divx player?
Thanks

yes. divx is not affected by the ESS option.

With regard to the Philips DVP642, does anyone have any advice for specifying a horizontal resolution if you only want to play the resulting files from that player on an NTSC 4:3 TV? I ask because I back up lots of episodic discs (e.g., 24, Sopranos, etc.) which are 720x480 and when leaving auto resolution checked AutoGK will frequently yield a res which the Philips "blows up" to fill the entire TV screen (i.e., no black bars at the top and bottom, so I lose significant portions of the original video). I've found that if the resulting .avi is anything more than 628 this problem turns up, so going with a max resolution of 628 prevents the problem.
But if I'm only playing these Xvids on the Philips, should I force a resolution which is even less than that (i.e., closer to NTSC's max res)? I ask because on one TV FAQ I read the following, and am wondering if it's just a waste to have a higher resolution:
"For NTSC, the picture occupies approximately 480 of the 525 scan lines. For broadcasts the portion of a scan line that is visible can hold up to about 440 dots so a grid 480 high by 440 wide represents the maximum amount of picture detail possible."

Not true for latest version of AutoGK - it forces HT profile (as bitrate spike control is no longer an option).

OK, Thanks for the info. So bitrate spike control doesn't work with DivX anymore? Why is that?

bitrate spike control is basically a feature of the DivX Profiles, so you don't need to set the option - simply use the Home Theatre profile.
