I have a number of mpg video files with embedded ac3 audio, they play okay
in every program you can throw them at except in Vegas and DVD Architect
that identifies them as MainConcept mpeg 2 video files - no audio.
NeroVision Express is quite happy with the files. If I use DVD Architect I
end up with a DVD that does not have sound.

If I demux them and remux, saving as mpg2 or pcm or whatever audio rather than ac3 the problem goes away.

I have checked every preference setting known to man!
Any clues gratefully accepted!!

Are you shure you should give dvd-architect a multiplexed stream? The programs i am familiar with al require elementary streams. Multiplexing is usualy the job of the dvd audthoring program.

Well it is an authoring program but I have made many DVD's, creating chapters etc etc with it using standard mpg files with imbedded PCM audio or files that Windows Media Player would happily play. DVD Architect seems to recognise these files as "Video mpeg2 - audio 48k etc etc" I am beginning to think it has something to do with the codec.
In other words any mpeg file that has audio in it is clearly recognised by DVD Architect and can be used, it's only when an ac3 audio is involved.

As an experiment I recorded off digital TV (standard def) a short program, used ProjectX to demux it, revealed one video track, 2 audio tracks, one was ac3 the other mpg and a subtitle track.

I remux first with the ac3 file using Womble and produced a perfectly playable mpeg file in WMP, media Player clasic etc etc. loaded into Vegas and into DVD Arch and as far as those programs were concerned no audio! Remux with the mpeg audio voile! Every thing works. Finally DVD Arch outputs a AC3 audio!!!!

follow up none of this happens if I use NeroVision Express, it's a pity that NVE is so slow compared to Sony's DVD Architect which is more functional in many respects.

You need to demux the mpeg file first Architect recognises m2v files but is slow to read them therfore after demuxing load up the mpeg file again. If you name the ac3 file the same as the mpeg (eg test.mpg and test.ac3) Architect will automatically load the ac3 file when you load the mpg file.
Vegas does NOT recognise ac3 files at all even though you can encode ac3 with vegas.
