Here i got an old animation dvd. It seems that it is transformed from film and there is a lot of noise such as dots and scratches, and also a lot of fluctuating pixels(I don't know how to call it in english..). It's hard to compress, the 1st pass size of xvid is about 700-800M with a 26mins part of it(resized to 640x480), only with some slight denoise filters. So i come here to ask for some suggustions to deal with this clip. My goal is to compress it to about 330M, keeping most static texture detail. In fact this clip have a lot of static scenes but those noises make these scenes hard to compress and waste a lot of bitrate. Some filter i have tried removes too much detail.

For spot and scratches removal, you could try Fizick's DeSpot and DeScratch (http://bag.hotmail.ru/). I can't tell you how to use them as I never tried them myself though. I'm not sure what you mean by "fluctuating pixels", maybe DeDot_YV12 (http://nullinfo.s21.xrea.com/#DeDot_YV12) can help out, it did wonders on an extremely crappy cartoon DVD I have. As for extra filter recommendations, it's impossible to suggest something without actually seeing your source. Can you post a small sample vob?

hmm... what title is this? the uncut dragon ball Z is grainy as hell. so grainy that a denoiser can't do anything against it without destroying the image completely. it's possibly the noisiest anime i've ever seen, and it's supposedly remastered (okay, well, it's a sharp transfer and has a good 3:2 pattern, but the grain is inexcusably bad).

i think beyond episode 1 it gets better though.

well, anyway, if it's anything like that, you'll have to break out the noise reduction nukes and not be afraid of killing a little detail. you could also use a quant matrix that favours low frequencies (trades off blocking for ringing) as mosquito noise would probably be masked by grain at playback. this would not remove the noise, but at least make the encoder fail a little more gracefully.

eh..I'm finding space to store the sample vob...
i have tried DeSpot but it seems not so effect, as some spots and scratches last for more than 1 frame, which make it hard to be distinguished.
And then, i would like to try the DeDot filter, but is seems that i can't open your link...maybe it's because of some limits of my network..i will try some more proxies...

What about a temporal denoiser for the "fluctuating pixels" with or without motion compensation like TTempSmooth on http://bengal.missouri.edu/~kes25c/

By the way I'm interested in some image samples. Could you take 3-4 screenshots of your dvd ? (and mug funky too, if you could send some nice samples ^_^)
I'm working on an improvement of an existing filter but I really would like to optimize it for this kind of source.

MipSmooth (http://www.avisynth.org/warpenterprises/) is my personal all-purpose smoother of choice. It's probably not as powerful and versatile as other filters, but it's fairly easy and foolproof to use.

Therefore, you must firstly restore progressive stream.
